You can play some PS2 games on a jailbroken PS4 by turning a PS2 game image into an installable PS4 package that runs through Sony’s PS2 Classics emulator. You cannot play a PS2 disc directly: PlayStation Support says PS2 game software cannot be used on PS4. This is a homebrew workflow, not native disc compatibility, and results vary by game and regional release.
What you need to know before starting
- A compatible jailbreak for your exact firmware. Firmware 9.00 uses the pOOBs4 browser entry point with a specially formatted exFAT USB drive; lower firmware versions may require different methods. Do not assume one set of jailbreak instructions covers every version. Check the maintained PS4 exploit-host overview and follow instructions matching your system software.
- A PS2 game image you are entitled to use. The workflow packages a game image; it does not make a disc playable or provide game files. Do not download unauthorized copies.
- A package-building tool and a way to install the package. PS2-FPKG supports ISO and BIN/CUE inputs and can build PS4 packages for exploited consoles. You will also need a transfer method, such as USB or network transfer, and an available homebrew package-installation route.
Jailbreaking and homebrew carry risks, including system instability and changes in what online services or updates the console can use. Follow current guidance for your firmware and understand the consequences before modifying the console.
Check whether your specific PS2 game works
Before converting anything, look up the exact game and regional release in the PS4 Developer wiki PS2 Classics compatibility list. Its entries distinguish playable, imperfect, and unplayable cases and may record glitches, fixes, emulator choices, or configuration notes. A game that starts may still have broken audio, visual issues, poor performance, or a problem that prevents progress.
Do not treat a listing for one region as proof that another region behaves the same way. Note the release and any listed emulator or configuration requirements before building the package.

Build and install a PS2 game package
- Confirm firmware and jailbreak status. In the PS4 settings, check the system software version, then use a current guide specific to that version. For 9.00, the pOOBs4 entry point uses the browser and a specially formatted exFAT USB image; lower versions can have different exploit paths.
- Check the compatibility entry. Match the game’s region and read any notes about emulator variants, patches, or configuration. Compatibility details can be title- and release-specific.
- Prepare a lawful game image. PS2-FPKG documentation lists ISO and BIN/CUE support. Use the input format and preparation steps specified by the tool you choose; do not combine procedures from different converters. For example, an older PS2 Classics GUI guide instructs users to convert BIN to ISO first, which is not a reason to apply that requirement to PS2-FPKG.
- Create the PS4 package. Use PS2-FPKG or another compatible tool, following its current documentation. Select an emulator variant or add a TXT/Lua configuration only when the game’s compatibility notes support that choice.
- Transfer the package to the PS4. Copy it by USB or use network transfer. The PS2 Classics GUI guide describes USB and FTP approaches, though interface details can change as tools and software versions change.
- Install and launch it. Install the package using the homebrew package-installation route available on your console, such as a package installer or the package-install feature provided by GoldHEN. Menu labels and exact steps depend on the software version. Once installed, launch it as a PS4 title.
Troubleshoot problems by checking the game-specific details
- The package will not build: Check the converter’s current instructions and confirm that your image uses a supported format. Do not assume one tool’s BIN-to-ISO step applies to another.
- The game does not launch: Recheck the compatibility listing for the exact regional release and any emulator or configuration notes. Confirm that the package was transferred and installed successfully.
- The game launches but has glitches: Compare what you see with the title’s reported compatibility issues. If the entry documents a different emulator variant or configuration for that release, test only the documented option.
- You cannot follow the jailbreak steps: Verify the console’s exact firmware and consult instructions for that version rather than trying to apply the 9.00 procedure to a lower release.
Disc compatibility and the homebrew route are different
A standard PS4 does not play PS2 discs. PlayStation Support’s Japanese support page says PS3, PS2, and PlayStation game software cannot be used on PS4; that is the official boundary for native compatibility, not a guide to homebrew. The package method described here instead runs a converted game image through a PS2 Classics emulator on an exploited console.
