To summon spirits in Elden Ring, get the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna at the Church of Elleh after Melina gives you Torrent, assign a Spirit Ash to an item or pouch slot, then use it when the Rebirth Monument icon appears on the HUD. To upgrade Spirit Ashes, unlock Roderika’s Spirit Tuning service at Roundtable Hold and bring her the matching Glovewort.
How to get the Spirit Calling Bell
- Progress through the opening area until Melina gives you Torrent.
- Return to the Church of Elleh at night and speak with Renna. She gives you the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes. See the Spirit Calling Bell guide for details.
- If Renna is no longer at the church, check whether the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold have the bell available. The cited guides disagree about its price, so check the in-game shop rather than relying on a quoted amount.
How to summon with Spirit Ashes
- Assign the Spirit Ash you want to use to a pouch or item slot. You do not need to equip the Spirit Calling Bell; it is a key item that enables Spirit Ash use.
- Look for the Rebirth Monument icon, shown as a small tombstone on the left side of the HUD. The icon indicates that you are in an area where a spirit can be summoned.
- Use the assigned Ash when the icon is visible and you have enough FP. Summoning costs vary by Ash, so check the cost shown in its item description.
If the icon is absent, move to an eligible area near a Rebirth Monument. Spirit summons are unavailable during multiplayer, and only one spirit type can be active at a time. The Spirit Ashes guide covers summon availability and use.
How to unlock Roderika’s Spirit Tuning
- Speak with Roderika at Stormhill Shack and exhaust her dialogue. Her early quest involves Stormveil Castle and the Chrysalids’ Memento. If she has already moved on, continue looking for her at Roundtable Hold.
- At Roundtable Hold, speak with Roderika, then talk to Smithing Master Hewg about her. Continue moving between their dialogue until Hewg agrees to teach her Spirit Tuning. If the next dialogue does not appear, rest or reload the area and check again.
- When Roderika is seated opposite Hewg, speak to her and choose Spirit Tuning to open the upgrade menu.

Which materials upgrade Spirit Ashes?
The material depends on the Ash category. Standard Spirit Ashes use Grave Glovewort; renowned Spirit Ashes use Ghost Glovewort. The cited guides report that individual Ashes can be upgraded to +10.

Shadow of the Erdtree: Revered Spirit Ash blessings
In the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Revered Spirit Ash blessings strengthen spirits in the Realm of Shadow. They are a regional DLC mechanic, separate from upgrading an individual Ash with Grave or Ghost Glovewort at Roderika’s service. The Revered Spirit Ash guide explains the blessing.

Common Spirit Ash problems
- The bell is missing: Check the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold if you missed Renna at the Church of Elleh.
- The bell is not equipped: That is expected. Assign the Spirit Ash itself to a usable slot.
- No summon icon appears: Move into an eligible area near a Rebirth Monument.
- You cannot afford the summon: Check the Ash’s FP cost and your current FP; costs differ between Ashes.
- You are playing multiplayer: Spirit summons are disabled during multiplayer.
- Roderika has no Spirit Tuning option: Continue her and Hewg’s Roundtable dialogue progression, then rest or reload if their next dialogue state does not appear.
- You have the wrong upgrade material: Use Grave Glovewort for standard Ashes and Ghost Glovewort for renowned Ashes.
Choosing a Spirit Ash for an encounter
There is no single Ash established as the best choice for every fight. Consider what the encounter calls for and which Ashes you have: a summon that draws enemy attention can create openings, while ranged support may help against foes that are difficult to approach. Check an Ash’s displayed FP cost as well as its role before assigning it.
