To remove the 9,999-per-hit damage cap in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, defeat the Paintress at the end of Act 2 and equip the Painted Power Picto. Later, after unlocking Act 3: Maelle, you can also change the cap—or turn it off—in Challenge Settings at an Expedition Flag.
Remove the per-hit cap with Painted Power
Early in the game, a single hit cannot exceed 9,999 damage. Painted Power is the story-progression unlock that lets an individual hit go beyond that threshold. You receive it by defeating the Paintress near the end of Act 2; it is not an early collectible to hunt down.

- Progress through the story until the Paintress encounter at the end of Act 2.
- Defeat the Paintress to obtain the Painted Power Picto.
- Equip Painted Power on a character. Its effect is: “Damage can exceed 9,999.”
According to Game8’s guide, updated December 12, 2025, the Picto’s effect can also be learned as a Lumina. GamesRecon’s guide, updated July 19, 2026, says that once learned, the Lumina can be equipped more broadly without keeping the Picto in that character’s loadout.
Change the cap later with Challenge Settings
Challenge Settings offer a separate way to control the damage cap after Act 3: Maelle is unlocked. At an Expedition Flag, open Challenge Settings and choose a cap setting or uncapped damage.

Guides agree that this later menu can control the cap, but they do not give a consistent list of available values. Game8 lists 99,999, 999,999, or uncapped damage, while GamesRecon also mentions 9,999. If you need a specific limit, check the options shown in your current game rather than relying on a fixed list.
Which method should you use?

What to do before Act 2 ends
You cannot remove the single-hit cap early by grinding levels, upgrading weapons, or stacking ordinary damage boosts. Those may increase damage dealt, but they are not the cap-removal unlock.

Multi-hit skills can still total more than 9,999 before you obtain Painted Power: each hit remains subject to the per-hit limit, while the damage from several hits adds up. A total above 9,999 therefore does not mean the single-hit cap has been removed.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the single-player RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, as identified on its Steam listing. The cap instructions here are based on specialist guides; the retrieved official patch 1.3.0 announcement did not provide enough detail to independently confirm the settings behavior.
