Defeat 40 Sandcarvers to complete their Hunter’s Journal entry. They hide beneath shifting sand and emerge when Hornet approaches, so use a tool that can hit them in the pit and keep track of your total in the Journal.
How many Sandcarvers do you need to defeat?
The full entry requires 40 kills, according to the community-maintained Hunter’s Journal reference. The Journal explains that enemy entries are completed by defeating a specified number of that enemy.
Where to find Sandcarvers
Look for loose or shifting sand pits. Sandcarvers live beneath them and burst out when they sense nearby movement. Their in-game Journal description, reproduced by the community-maintained Sandcarver reference, is “Shell plated worm that lives beneath pools of shifting sand.”
A Gamer Guides interactive map lists a Sandcarver location, but the available route information does not establish dependable room-by-room directions. Use the in-game map or the mapped reference to navigate rather than relying on an unverified route.

How to defeat them and count the kills
- Approach a shifting-sand pit to trigger a Sandcarver’s emergence.
- Use a Cogwork Wheel, Pimpillo, or Sawtooth Circlet to damage and defeat it. These tools are listed as ways to defeat Sandcarvers for the Journal entry in the Sandcarver reference; no source ranks them by speed or efficiency.
- Repeat until you have defeated 40. Check the Journal from the menu to track the entry. You can review it after obtaining the Hunter’s Journal from Nuu in Greymoor, as described in the Journal reference.
Why the sand pit stays dangerous
Defeating a Sandcarver does not clear the pit: new ones spawn in the same area. Treat the sand as a continuing hazard while you work toward the 40-kill total.
