To build a mansion in Minecraft, plan the site, footprint, rooms, and materials first, then construct the foundation and frame before adding floors, walls, a roof, lighting, and furnishings. This guide covers a player-designed mansion; a generated woodland mansion is a different structure you can explore and later renovate.
Custom mansion or woodland mansion?
A custom mansion is a build you design and construct block by block. A woodland mansion is a large generated structure found in a dense forest biome and occupied by illagers. After clearing one, you can adapt its interior: Minecraft writer Duncan Geere puts it simply, “Once you’ve evicted the residents of a woodland mansion, it’s up to you what you do with it.” Minecraft’s woodland mansion feature describes its rooms and customization possibilities.
The steps below are for a custom build. If you meant renovating a generated mansion, first clear it, then inspect the rooms and decide what to keep, remove, or extend.
How to build a custom mansion step by step
1. Choose your mode and style
In Survival, choose a design and palette you can gather at the scale you want; a mansion can consume far more materials than a starter house. In Creative, use the freedom to prototype the shape, roof, and rooms before settling on a final layout. Decide on a style—such as a wooden manor or modern mansion—so the shape and materials work together.

2. Choose a site and mark the plot
Look for accessible terrain with enough room for the building and any wings, yard, or approach you want. Flatten only the area the plan requires. There is no required biome or standard mansion footprint: choose a site that suits your design and the resources available in your world.
3. Sketch the footprint and room plan
Mark the outer corners and the main divisions on the ground before building upward. Plan the entrance and circulation first, then assign useful spaces such as bedrooms, storage, a crafting area, a kitchen, or an enchanting room. Generated woodland mansions include varied spaces such as libraries, dining rooms, forges, storage rooms, bedrooms, and map rooms; they can offer inspiration without serving as a blueprint for a custom build.

4. Choose a consistent block palette
Pick a main wall material, a contrasting frame or trim, a foundation block, a roof material, and glass. Keep the main palette restrained, then use stairs, slabs, fences, trapdoors, and lighting for detail. In Survival, check the gathering and crafting burden before committing to a large design.
Material counts depend on the build, not on a universal mansion recipe. For example, Lex The Builder’s 2023 wooden mansion tutorial lists 1,130 stripped spruce logs and 1,065 spruce planks for that particular design; those figures should not be treated as requirements for other mansions. 5. Lay the foundation and raise the frame
Build the perimeter, mark the entrance and corners, and raise the main supports to the planned floor height. Keep spacing consistent around the footprint so wall sections and windows align. This is a flexible construction sequence, not a fixed blueprint: adjust the layout to the dimensions and style you chose.
6. Add floors, walls, and openings
Complete each floor in manageable sections. Add doors, windows, and stairs while the interior is easy to reach. Repeat window spacing to give the façade rhythm, and use trim or changes in wall depth to break up broad, flat surfaces.

7. Shape the roof
Finish the main roof before adding smaller features such as dormers, towers, or decorative gables. Step back and check the silhouette from a distance; keep the roof details proportional to the building rather than adding them simply to fill space.
8. Light and furnish the interior
Light each floor, then add essentials such as beds and storage before spending time on decoration. Minecraft’s survival-base tutorial recommends torches or lanterns for protection from mobs and identifies a bed and storage as useful basics for a house. 9. Finish the exterior and revise the layout
Once the shell is complete, add features such as paths, landscaping, balconies, or a garden. Walk through the rooms and check that doors, stairs, and routes between spaces work as intended. If a room feels awkward or too small, repurpose it or adjust the interior before adding more decoration.
