For the simplest Windows setup, create and save a server preset in Content Manager, then use its Pack function to export the configuration and required files. You can launch the server from Content Manager for convenience or from a dedicated folder for portability. Public hosting also requires allowing the configured ports through your router and host firewall. Linux uses a separate SteamCMD workflow.
Choose a server setup route
This guide covers the original Assetto Corsa, not Assetto Corsa Competizione or Assetto Corsa EVO. The most approachable Windows configuration path in the available documentation uses Content Manager and AssettoServer. The Linux path uses SteamCMD to install the dedicated server and then requires you to supply the game content. These are distinct setups, so follow the instructions for your host environment.
| Choice | What it suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Launch from Content Manager | A quick Windows setup and convenient server management. | Less portable than keeping the server in its own folder. |
| Launch from a dedicated folder | A portable setup with more flexibility for advanced configuration. | Requires managing the server files and configuration in that folder. |
| Linux host with SteamCMD | A Linux or remote-server workflow. | Requires command-line setup, supplying car and track content, and maintaining the host environment. |
The AssettoServer beginner guide uses Content Manager’s full version to generate files, but says the full version is not required to host, configure, or play. Manual configuration is another option; the AssettoServer Beginner’s Guide points readers to the Kunos server manual for that route.
Create and pack a Windows server preset
- Set up the session in Content Manager. Choose a server name, track and layout, maximum number of entries, and session rules. Match the entry capacity to the available pit slots for that layout; exceeding its pit limit can cause a crash when a player joins.
- Save the preset. Keep the configuration together as a named preset so you can return to it and adjust it later.
- Pack the server files. Use Content Manager’s Pack function to export the preset and the files it needs. This gives you the configuration and required data to use in the server location.
- Choose where to launch it. Run the server within Content Manager for convenience, or place the server files in a dedicated folder and launch them there for portability and more advanced flexibility.
- For AssettoServer, add its executable to the server folder. The guide describes placing the AssettoServer executable alongside the original Assetto Corsa server executable. Follow the guide’s current instructions for preparing and starting that implementation.
For details on preset packing, launch options, and configuration, see the AssettoServer Beginner’s Guide.

Set up a Linux dedicated server
The Linux guide uses SteamCMD and dedicated server app ID 302550. It states that the Steam account used to download the server must own Assetto Corsa, app ID 244210. The dedicated server download does not include cars or tracks, so the guide instructs you to copy the cars and tracks folders from an Assetto Corsa installation.
- Install and run SteamCMD on the Linux host, then use the Linux setup guide’s instructions to download app ID 302550.
- Ensure the Steam account used for downloading owns Assetto Corsa (app ID 244210).
- Copy the required cars and tracks folders from an Assetto Corsa installation into the server content location as specified by the guide.
- Configure the server and network ports for your setup, then start it and inspect the logs for errors.
Use the Linux dedicated server setup guide for its SteamCMD commands, file locations, and host-specific troubleshooting. It also notes that missing 32-bit libraries or an architecture mismatch can prevent the executable from running.

Make the server reachable
For the default AssettoServer configuration, its beginner guide specifies forwarding TCP and UDP port 9600 and TCP port 8081. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that every preset uses those ports. Check the actual values in server_cfg.ini, then allow those ports through both the router and the host machine’s firewall where applicable.
- Public server: Router forwarding and host firewall rules must permit the configured traffic for players outside your local network.
- LAN server: Players on the same local network can use the local address; a local IP does not provide an outside player with a public route to the host.
- After changing ports: Update forwarding and firewall rules to match the configuration rather than relying on the documented defaults.
Once the server is running, check its logs for startup or lobby-registration errors. Then look for it in the relevant online or LAN listing and test a connection. Give outside players a public join address or link rather than the host’s local IP. See the AssettoServer networking instructions for the documented default ports and setup details.

Troubleshoot listing, connection, and join failures
- It does not appear in the public listing: Confirm the ports in
server_cfg.ini, router forwarding, and host firewall rules. A server that appears on LAN but not publicly points toward a routing or firewall issue, though the exact cause depends on the network. - Players cannot connect: Check that the configured traffic is permitted end to end. The Linux setup guide identifies blocked UDP 9600 as one possible cause; customized configurations may use different ports.
- A join causes a crash: Reduce the server’s entry capacity to fit the pit limit of the selected track layout.
- A Linux executable will not run: Check for missing 32-bit libraries or an architecture mismatch, both listed in the Linux setup guide.
- A server panel says the server is stopped: If using the panel covered by the Linux guide, compare
HTTP_PORTinserver_cfg.iniwith the dashboard environment configuration and align the values. - An optional feature does not work: Verify that the chosen server implementation supports it and that clients satisfy any compatibility requirements.
Add optional AssettoServer features carefully
AssettoServer documentation describes optional features including AI traffic, weather, and Steam authentication. They add configuration requirements and may depend on what clients have installed. The documentation specifies CSP 0.1.75 or higher and Content Manager v0.8.2297.38573 or higher for Steam authentication; its dynamic WeatherFX features require CSP 0.1.76 or higher. These version requirements are specific to the documented features; check the AssettoServer documentation for current support and setup details before enabling them.
