Then check whether publishing is disabled because a playtest is running, the place exceeds Roblox’s size limit, or your account lacks permission to publish a group-owned experience.
First, make a local backup
Before troubleshooting a cloud save, export the project with File > Save to File or Download a Copy. This creates a local file you can keep safe while checking the upload problem. Do not delete assets or reorganize a large place until you have this backup.
Roblox recommends publishing every ten minutes or after a major change in its Test and save tutorial. Regular publishing can reduce how much work is at risk, but a local copy is especially useful when publishing is currently failing.
Is the publish command disabled or is the upload failing?
Publish is greyed out
If Publish to Roblox is greyed out, stop the active playtest and try again. Roblox Studio can disable publishing while a playtest is running.

Publish starts but fails
If the command is available but the save or upload fails, check the exported .rbxl file size next. Roblox supports places up to 100 MB (104,857,600 bytes); a larger place can fail with Save to Roblox or Publish to Roblox. The exported file is slightly larger than the uploaded place data, so its size is a useful estimate rather than an exact measurement of the upload. See Roblox’s Place files documentation.
What to do if the place is too large
Use the local export to inspect the project and reduce size carefully. Roblox’s place-file guidance identifies several areas to review:

- Remove redundant or hidden assets, such as duplicate parts and textures.
- Review models and their scripts for obfuscated or unclear content.
- Simplify terrain where it is practical for the experience.
- Review mesh collision fidelity. Box and Hull settings are more memory-efficient than the default collision setting.
If these changes are not enough, consider splitting a large universe into multiple linked places. Keep the exported backup before deleting or moving content, and try publishing again after each substantial reduction.
Check for a recovery file after a size-limit failure
Roblox documents automatic recovery files for saves that fail because the place exceeds the file-size limit. The recovery behavior described by Roblox is specific to that failure type; it is not a guarantee that every failed cloud save creates a recoverable file.

Check the AutoSaves folder for your operating system:
- Windows:

Open a candidate recovery file carefully, then immediately save it as a separate copy. With collaboration enabled, Studio backs up the last three save attempts; without collaboration, it uses the Auto-Recovery settings. You can review Auto-Recovery Enabled and Auto-Recovery Interval (Minutes) in Studio’s settings as safeguards for future work, but these settings do not prove that a particular failed cloud save can be recovered. Confirm publishing access for a group-owned experience
If the experience belongs to a Roblox group, check the creator’s role and game permissions. Roblox treats Edit experiences and Publish experiences as separate permissions; publishing access includes the ability to edit and publish games. Group owners or members with sufficient access may also adjust permissions for an individual game. Review Roblox’s group documentation and publishing guidance.

- Make a local backup with File > Save to File or Download a Copy.
- If Publish to Roblox is disabled, stop playtesting and retry.
- If the cloud save fails, check the exported
.rbxlsize against Roblox’s 100 MB place limit. - If the place is large, review duplicate assets, models and scripts, terrain, and mesh collision settings; split it into linked places only if other reductions are insufficient.
- If the failure involved the documented size-limit case, look for a recovery file in the relevant AutoSaves folder.
- For a group-owned experience, confirm that you have both editing and publishing access.
- If these checks do not explain the failure, record the exact error message and consult Roblox’s current support or service-status channels.
Roblox’s documentation covers these common size, playtest, recovery, and permission cases, but does not establish one fix for every network interruption, account-specific issue, or service-side error. The exact error message—and whether local export works—can help distinguish those cases.
