Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version launched on Nintendo Switch on February 27, 2026, and Nintendo lists both as playable on Nintendo Switch 2. They are standalone digital releases of the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes—not new remakes, physical editions, or additions to the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics collection. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required.
What the Switch releases are
These releases bring the Game Boy Advance versions of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen to Switch as standalone software. Nintendo describes the originals as 2004 remakes of the first Pokémon games, which debuted in Japan in 1996 as Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. The Switch versions return to the Kanto region and its 151 original Pokémon, with turn-based battles, the original soundtrack, and Game Boy Advance-era features including abilities, natures, weather, held items, and a choice of player character gender. Nintendo’s February 20, 2026 announcement introduced the releases.

The US FireRed product listing also specifies the Sevii Islands and in-game events featuring Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys. Nintendo’s listing gives a 39 MB file size for that US edition.
How to get them—and what is not included
Nintendo says the Switch releases are digital-only: there will be no physical editions, and the games are not planned for the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics collection. That means the choice is between the two separately sold games and their language editions, not between cartridge and download. Buying an original Game Boy Advance cartridge is a separate option, not a physical copy of the Switch release.

Purchase through the Nintendo digital storefront for your region. Nintendo’s North American announcement and support FAQ describe the Switch releases as digital software. The FAQ says Nintendo continues to offer classic games through Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, but it does not promise that these two games will join that catalog.
Switch 2 compatibility and multiplayer
Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility as supported and says the games behave consistently with Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Support says there are no major performance differences between the two systems. The US FireRed listing specifies local wireless play for two to five players, counting the player’s own system.
The Wireless Club supports trading, battling, and a minigame with up to four other players over local wireless. Online play is not supported. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to buy or play the games, including for their local wireless features, according to Nintendo Support.
Choose the right game and language edition
FireRed and LeafGreen are separate versions, so choose based on the version you prefer. The checked Nintendo announcement establishes that different versions exist but does not enumerate all version-exclusive Pokémon; do not rely on an unsupported list when making the choice.

Nintendo’s North American FAQ lists English, European French, and European Spanish editions for each game in the Americas. The UK listings show English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish editions; those regional lists should not be treated as a worldwide availability guarantee.
