In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, guides place Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine in Yamashiro’s Ogura Pond area, where the activity involves praying at three shrines. The name refers to a real Hachiman shrine in Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture—but the available sources do not establish that the game reproduces the real site’s exact location or architecture.

Where is Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Third-party guides locate the shrine in the Ogura Pond area of Yamashiro. VULKK describes it as across the river from Oyamazaki Village. These are guide-based map directions, not an official Ubisoft location description, and routes or rewards may vary by game version.

How do you complete the shrine activity?

The guides describe a three-part prayer activity at the site. Restart.run says to pay respect at three shrines; VULKK places the three prayer points in the eastern half of the grounds.

  • Find and interact with each of the three prayer points in the shrine grounds.
  • Restart.run reports a reward of 500 XP and one Knowledge Point for completing the activity. Treat this as guide-reported gameplay information, which may depend on the game version.

What story visit is connected to the shrine?

Gamer Guides’ walkthrough for “The Fool: Missing Missive” describes a story visit in which Naoe and Yasuke go to the shrine in connection with a sumo match and their search for Ise Sadaoki. This is the walkthrough’s account of the quest, rather than a shrine-specific description from Ubisoft.

Is the game shrine based on the real Iwashimizu Hachimangu?

The shared name and broad regional context connect the game location to the real shrine, but they do not prove an exact recreation. In the real world, Iwashimizu Hachimangu stands on Mt. Otokoyama in Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture. The game guides place its counterpart in the Yamashiro map’s Ogura Pond area. The available sources do not verify that the game’s geography or buildings match the real site.

The real shrine’s history and architecture

Origins and religious role

Yawata City dates the shrine’s foundation to 859, when the monk Gyokyo established it, and says the sanctuary ordered by the imperial court was completed in 860. The city describes Hachiman as a guardian of Kyoto and the imperial family. Over the centuries, emperors, shoguns, nobles, warriors, merchants and commoners visited the shrine.

For many centuries, Iwashimizu Hachimangu was part of a shrine-temple complex combining Shinto and Buddhist elements. Government policies separating Shinto and Buddhism in the nineteenth century changed that institutional arrangement.

The present main complex

The Japan Tourism Agency says the main shrine was reconstructed under Tokugawa Iemitsu and completed in 1634. Its Hachiman-zukuri design looks from the side like two structures, but is one building with two roofs and an outer and inner hall. The agency describes more than 150 colorful woodcarvings of plants, animals and mythical creatures, as well as a gold-coated rain gutter donated by Oda Nobunaga. These details document the real shrine; they are not evidence that the game modeled those features.

Visiting the real shrine

Kyoto tourism information lists the address as 30 Yawata Takabo, Yawata City, Kyoto. It describes access by Keihan Main Line to Iwashimizu-hachimangu Station, followed by a cable car and a five-minute walk, and lists hours of 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and year-round opening. Because transport and opening details can change, check the shrine or tourism authority’s current information before setting out.
