Monster Hunter Wilds Review: Teaching Old Hunters New Tricks

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces Focus Mode, wound targeting, and Seikret traversal, with cross-play and a stated welcome for both newcomers and veterans. Here’s what the available evidence supports—and what remains a question of play.

Is Monster Hunter Wilds good for beginners while still giving longtime hunters something new? Its design points toward a yes: Focus Mode and wound targeting add deliberate combat choices, while the game’s official launch framing welcomes both newcomers and veterans. But those features alone cannot prove that its onboarding works or that its hunts retain the depth experienced players want. Without firsthand testing or independent evidence in the available sources, the fairest verdict is that Wilds has a promising bridge between accessibility and mastery—not a verified success on both fronts.

What kind of game is Monster Hunter Wilds?

Monster Hunter Wilds is a hunting action game built around battling large monsters in natural environments, then using hunt resources to craft stronger weapons and armor. Capcom released it on February 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and announced cross-play as a series first. Capcom’s release announcement describes the launch and platforms; PlayStation’s game page identifies the PS5 version.

The series’ core appeal rests on learning a weapon, reading a monster’s behavior, and preparing for a demanding encounter. Wilds introduces new ways to approach that loop. The central question is not whether its feature list is longer, but whether those changes make each hunt more expressive without removing the practice and preparation that give veteran play its texture.

Do the new combat tools give hunters more control?

Focus Mode and targeted attacks

Focus Mode lets hunters aim and reposition attacks. Focus Strikes deal extra damage to highlighted wounds and weak points, according to PlayStation’s feature description. In principle, this gives players a more deliberate way to line up attacks and capitalize on openings: rather than only reacting to a monster, a hunter can aim at a particular vulnerable area.

  • Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
  • A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
  • New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
  • Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
  • Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.

That design raises a useful test for players: does precise targeting feel like an extension of a weapon’s identity, or does it turn different weapons into variations on the same targeting routine? The official description establishes what Focus Mode and Focus Strikes do, but not how satisfying, balanced, or demanding they feel in practice. It would be inaccurate to call them a proven improvement without direct play or attributed independent evaluation.

Wounds as a tactical invitation

Wound targeting suggests a risk-and-reward rhythm: hunters can focus on damaged areas and use Focus Strikes for added damage. Whether that rewards aggressive positioning, careful observation, or simply repeated attacks depends on how encounters play out. The feature offers a clear route to tactical decision-making, but the available official materials do not settle how often that decision is meaningful.

Does Wilds make Monster Hunter easier to enter?

Capcom and PlayStation explicitly frame Wilds for both a newcomer seeking a story adventure and a veteran returning for more hunts. In its February 27, 2025 launch article, PlayStation.Blog said: “Whether you’re a newcomer looking for a new story adventure to experience or a Monster Hunter series veteran with many hunts under your belt, we hope you’ll enjoy the ride that Monster Hunter Wilds will take you on!” That is an expression of intended audience, not independent proof that the game explains its systems well.

For a newcomer, the key question is whether the game makes preparation, weapon choices, and monster behavior legible at the pace they need. For a returning hunter, it is whether guidance reduces confusion without removing the need to master a weapon or learn an opponent. The feature descriptions and launch framing make accessibility a clear goal; they do not establish whether Wilds is too easy, too streamlined, or sufficiently deep. Those judgments require actual play or reliable, attributed independent reporting.

What does the Seikret change about a hunt?

The Seikret mount supports traversal through the world, according to PlayStation’s official materials. That gives the hunt a potential connective tool between tracking and combat: mounted movement may help players navigate the environment as they pursue a monster.

The meaningful question is whether that travel improves the rhythm of pursuit or makes the journey feel less consequential. A feature description cannot answer whether mounted traversal is engaging, how much time it saves, or how it affects the pace of a full hunt. Those are experiential questions rather than conclusions that can be drawn from the announcement alone.

How do multiplayer and platforms fit in?

Cross-play was announced as a series first, allowing players on different platforms to play together, per Capcom’s release announcement. That broadens the pool of potential hunting partners across the announced launch platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The announcement confirms the feature, but does not describe the practical quality of matchmaking or communication across platforms.

What is available now, and what is still announced?

Capcom announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance on June 8, 2026, as a large expansion scheduled for 2027. The announcement lists new quest ranks, locales, additional monsters, and expanded weapon actions. These are announced plans, not content that should be assumed available on October 8, 2026. Details are in Capcom’s expansion announcement.

For a purchase decision, separate the released base game from future promises. The expansion’s stated additions indicate areas Capcom plans to extend, but they do not establish the quality or size of the current endgame, nor whether the expansion will deliver exactly as announced.

What do sales and player reviews tell us?

Capcom reported that Monster Hunter Wilds had sold 10 million units worldwide by March 31, 2025, after its February 28, 2025 release. That is a publisher-reported sales milestone, not a measure of quality or evidence that the game suits any particular player. The figure and reporting date appear in Capcom’s announcement.

Steam’s English-language listing showed 70% positive from 85,466 reviews when retrieved on October 8, 2026. This is a dated, user-generated snapshot—not a critic score—and can change as more reviews are posted. It offers one platform-specific signal of player sentiment, not a substitute for evaluating combat, onboarding, or endgame in context. The listing is Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam.

Who should consider Monster Hunter Wilds?

Wilds is a natural candidate for players drawn to the series’ hunt-and-craft premise, and its stated features create a plausible entry point for newcomers as well as new combat questions for veterans. The evidence available here supports the existence of those design intentions and platform features, but does not support a definitive experiential verdict about difficulty, weapon balance, or endgame quality.

  • New to the series: consider it if the monster-hunting premise appeals to you, while recognizing that the official welcome to newcomers does not by itself demonstrate how clear the onboarding is.
  • Returning hunter: Focus Mode, wound targeting, and mounted traversal are the most concrete new mechanics to investigate; whether they add satisfying depth depends on how they feel in play.
  • Hunting with friends: cross-play is an announced supported feature across platforms, though the available source does not assess the day-to-day multiplayer experience.
