What is the story about?
The game is set in post-apocalyptic Moscow in 2039. According to Deep Silver, survivors have spent a quarter century in conflict in the Metro tunnels, while Hunter’s Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear. The reclusive Stranger is forced out of exile and must return to the Metro.
The story is original, developed by 4A Games in collaboration with Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Deep Silver says it is inspired by the books’ world and stories, but is not based on a specific novel. The publisher also frames the new protagonist and cast as a potential entry point for newcomers, while saying existing fans can appreciate connections to the wider universe.

In an August 26, 2026 hands-on preview for Xbox Wire, Will Fulton reported playing two hours from the middle of the game. He described exploration, stealth, combat, resource management, and horror scenes, as well as tactile interactions such as consulting an in-game map and crafting ammunition and gas-mask filters. Fulton’s preview portrays avoiding fights when possible as rewarding, while supporting both stealth and combat. These are impressions from a preview build, not a review of the final game.
