Yes. The next mainline Metro game is METRO 2039, and publisher Deep Silver describes it as a single-player story. It is distinct from Metro Awakening, the separate VR game. Deep Silver currently lists METRO 2039 for February 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC; that is an announced release plan, not a guarantee.
Is METRO 2039 single-player?
Yes. Deep Silver identifies METRO 2039 as the next mainline game in the series and describes it as “a powerful single-player story” combining exploration, survival, combat, and stealth. The publisher lists 4A Games as the developer and Deep Silver as publisher. Deep Silver’s official METRO 2039 page
The announcement describes a story-driven game, not a multiplayer release. It does not provide a player-count statistic or a detailed breakdown of every mode, so the confirmed point is the publisher’s explicit single-player description.
Is METRO 2039 a VR game?
The announced information does not identify METRO 2039 as a VR game. The VR title associated with the series is Metro Awakening, a separate game with a single-player campaign. PLAION lists Metro Awakening for PSVR 2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, Steam VR, and Viveport in its Metro Awakening FAQ. That distinction does not establish that METRO 2039 will never receive VR support; it means VR has not been announced for it in the cited official information.

What are METRO 2039’s release details?
Deep Silver says METRO 2039 is planned for February 2027, launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC. These are the publisher’s current announced details and may change. Pricing, editions, detailed PC requirements, and physical availability are not stated on the official page.
What is the story about?
The game is set in post-apocalyptic Moscow in 2039. According to Deep Silver, survivors have spent a quarter century in conflict in the Metro tunnels, while Hunter’s Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear. The reclusive Stranger is forced out of exile and must return to the Metro.
Rank #2
The story is original, developed by 4A Games in collaboration with Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Deep Silver says it is inspired by the books’ world and stories, but is not based on a specific novel. The publisher also frames the new protagonist and cast as a potential entry point for newcomers, while saying existing fans can appreciate connections to the wider universe.

In an August 26, 2026 hands-on preview for Xbox Wire, Will Fulton reported playing two hours from the middle of the game. He described exploration, stealth, combat, resource management, and horror scenes, as well as tactile interactions such as consulting an in-game map and crafting ammunition and gas-mask filters. Fulton’s preview portrays avoiding fights when possible as rewarding, while supporting both stealth and combat. These are impressions from a preview build, not a review of the final game.
