The dispute was part of Amazon Games’ July 2025 plan to merge worlds, including a proposal to move AP Southeast players to a US West world. After community feedback, Amazon revised the plan to retain one world in AP Southeast and one in SA East; the available sources do not show that this particular gathering alone caused the change. The game’s eventual shutdown is a separate matter: New World: Aeternum was delisted in January 2026 and is scheduled to go offline on January 31, 2027.
What the reported “40-person protest” was about
Position Is Everything reported on May 20, 2026, that around 40 players had gathered in-game to object to a server being closed. That is an approximate attendance figure from a secondary report, not an independently verified headcount. The event concerned a proposed world merge in July 2025, rather than the game’s later end-of-service announcement.
Amazon Games’ July 22, 2025, announcement outlined planned world merges, including a proposal that would consolidate AP Southeast worlds into El Dorado on US West. Players opposed losing a regional home world and being moved to a different region. Utopian Organ’s contemporaneous account described AP Southeast players gathering and using the official New World Discord to discuss their concerns. It is community reporting, not an official attendance record.
Why players objected—and why Amazon proposed merges
The disagreement involved competing priorities. Amazon Games said consolidation was intended to improve population, matchmaking and activity across worlds. Its announcement explained that merge decisions considered effects on population, including queue times and opportunities to participate in multiplayer content.

In community discussion, AP Southeast players raised concerns about regional play conditions and the loss of local community ties if their world was moved to US West. The sources establish that these concerns were voiced, not that every player shared them or that they represented a measured consensus. A more populated destination can support activity and matchmaking; preserving a regional world can matter to latency, continuity and player choice.
How Amazon changed the July 2025 plan
Amazon Games updated its announcement on July 23, 2025, after considering community feedback. It said: “After thorough consideration of community feedback received about the planned world merges, the decision has been made to retain one world in the AP Southeast and SA East regions.” The update is the clearest record of the policy change. It does not attribute the reversal to the reported gathering alone.

The protest was not the same as New World’s shutdown
Amazon’s regional merge revision in July 2025 and its later decision to end New World are separate events. In an official announcement dated January 15, 2026, Amazon Games said New World: Aeternum had been delisted that day and that servers were scheduled to go offline on January 31, 2027. The company also said there would be no new content or further server merges during the remaining service period. The planned end of service should not be read as evidence of a specific current player count, and the reported protest attendance does not establish the game’s overall population.

What affected players should know about world transfers
Amazon Games Support’s server-transfer guidance, checked October 8, 2026, says characters that have not logged into their game world for more than 180 days become unbound from their chosen world. The company says this is intended to reduce peak-period queue congestion while prioritizing active players.
- Unbinding does not erase a character’s progress or data.
- World-specific social connections, including company membership, friends and ignore lists, are removed, as are buy and sell orders.
- An affected character may select a new home world in the same region if it is not full. Fresh Start worlds are unavailable unless that world was the character’s original world.
These are the support page’s stated rules and may change. They describe the inactivity-based unbinding system; they do not alter Amazon’s announced January 31, 2027 end-of-service date.
