NYT Strands hints for January 12
The theme points to reactions to something shocking or astonishing. To preserve the puzzle, the clues below progress from general to specific.
- Theme: “Wait what?”
- Words to find for in-game hints: BALE, RAIL, SOLID, BOOM, NUTS, BEAR.
- Spangram clue: “Bewildered.” It runs from the top edge in column four to the bottom edge in column three.
- First-letter nudges: FL, AS, SU, ST, GO; the spangram begins MI.
How Strands hints work
Find theme words to fill the board. Theme words remain blue; you can drag across letters or tap them to form a word. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. Finding three non-theme words earns an in-game hint that reveals letters of a theme word. These mechanics are described in Parade’s reproduced NYT instructions and in Try Hard Guides’ explanation of the hint system.
