How do I update games on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo’s documented procedure for Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is also the practical route to check for a game update from HOME:

For example, Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour version 1.1.0 as released September 9, 2026. The update lets the VRR Slider tech demo be played in TV mode; that demonstration requires a VRR-compatible TV and an updated Nintendo Switch 2 dock. Nintendo also says the update fixes other gameplay issues without itemizing them. Nintendo’s version 1.1.0 notes say save data remains available after this update.
Is a game update the same as a Switch 2 system update?
No. A game update changes one title; a system update changes the console software. Nintendo Australia lists system software version 23.0.1, released October 1, 2026, as the latest version. It fixes an issue in version 23.0.0 that could make software take a long time to start, pause, or close. This is a console-level fix, not a game-by-game patch list. See Nintendo Australia’s system update information for the dated release details.
Does my Nintendo Switch game get a free Switch 2 upgrade?
Not automatically. Nintendo says some original Nintendo Switch games receive free updates that add content or improve performance on Switch 2, while other enhancements are offered as paid upgrades. The available path depends on the specific game, so check its official publisher information rather than assuming every compatible Switch game gets the same treatment. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains the free-update and paid-upgrade distinction.

Free update
A free update patches a compatible Switch game for Switch 2, potentially adding content or improving performance. It is distinct from buying a separate edition or paying for an upgrade pack.
Paid upgrade pack
Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor schedule describes upgrade packs for listed Switch 2 Edition games: owners of the packaged or downloadable Nintendo Switch version can purchase the pack to access the Switch 2 Edition. Eligibility and terms vary by title and region; the schedule warns that release dates can change and differ by region. Confirm current details with Nintendo or the game’s publisher.
Separately sold Switch 2 Edition
A Switch 2 Edition may also be sold as its own product. Do not assume that buying the original game entitles you to every edition’s extra content or that a particular upgrade pack is available in every region. Check the game’s current product and publisher pages for what is included and the applicable terms. Nintendo’s 2026 product schedule documents the upgrade-pack model, not a guarantee of current availability.

Will my Switch game work on Nintendo Switch 2?
Many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games are compatible, but compatibility is title-specific: some games may not be supported or may not work fully as intended. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information before relying on a particular title or feature. Nintendo directs players to the game’s publisher for details about third-party games. See Nintendo Australia’s compatibility guidance and Nintendo Support’s compatibility overview.
There is no single complete update list here: individual game patches, compatibility notes, and Switch 2 Edition terms change over time. For a specific game, verify its current version and release notes with its publisher, and check the region where you plan to play or purchase.
