Nintendo says the systems’ different hardware is the reason some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Its published compatibility summary is dated June 5, 2025, so check the game’s current Nintendo listing or ask its publisher before relying on a specific status.
Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. That is broad backward compatibility, not a guarantee that every game or every feature will work. Nintendo’s overview says: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo’s compatibility overview also notes that some Switch games receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance on Switch 2.

Compatibility can mean several different things: a title may not start, a game may have an issue during play, only a particular mode or input may be affected, or the game may require an original Switch controller or accessory. Those distinctions matter: needing an old Joy-Con for one mode is not the same as a game being unplayable.
Which Switch games or apps have compatibility problems?
Nintendo’s US compatibility summary lists examples across several severity levels. It includes apps and services as well as games, and it is not a complete, live inventory: Nintendo dates the information to June 5, 2025 and says status can change if issues are found. Nintendo’s compatibility list separates software that cannot be used from titles with controller, feature or accessory limitations.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Software listed as unusable
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit: Nintendo says it cannot be played because Switch 2 cannot be inserted into the Toy-Con VR Goggles.
- Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll and InkyPen: Nintendo lists these apps or services as unavailable on Switch 2.
Games with original Joy-Con or mode-specific limitations
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit into the Leg Strap. Original Switch Joy-Con can be used with the Ring-Con on Switch 2.
- 1-2-Switch: Its camera-dependent tests need the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, so use an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly for those tests.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Joy-Con 2’s lower force-feedback vibration volume may make the Joy-Con Hide & Seek minigame harder. Nintendo describes a limitation, not a blanket incompatibility.
- Game Builder Garage: In Free Programming mode, camera-dependent IR Motion Camera Nodon or IR-Light Nodon use requires an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the Leg Strap, so Soccer Shoot-Out requires an original Joy-Con.
- WarioWare: Move It!: Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly.
Nintendo Labo kits with altered experiences
- Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit: Original Joy-Con may work with Toy-Con accessories, but the larger Switch 2 console cannot be placed in the Fishing Rod, Motorbike, Piano or House accessories. The RC Car antenna also cannot attach to the console, so the experience differs from the original.
- Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Robot accessory; original Joy-Con can be used.
- Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit: Switch 2 cannot be placed in the included screen stand, changing the original experience.
The VR Kit is a more severe case than these altered Labo experiences: Nintendo lists it as unusable, while the other kits have specific physical limitations.
Why do some games need original Joy-Con?
Joy-Con 2 lacks the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera and does not fit some legacy accessories. That affects camera-dependent inputs in games such as 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage and WarioWare: Move It!, as well as physical setups such as Ring Fit Adventure’s Ring-Con and Leg Strap.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the new console. Nintendo says you need a Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or two-way charging stand to charge the original controllers. Using old Joy-Con can restore the controller-dependent function in the relevant cases; it does not fix software-level incompatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you check whether a specific Switch game works?
- Check the game’s Nintendo product page or eShop listing. Nintendo directs players to the title’s page for its current compatibility information. Its summary is dated June 5, 2025, and Nintendo says it updates status if it discovers problems.
- For a third-party game, check the publisher’s support notice. Nintendo directs players to the game’s publisher for title-specific compatibility information. Review the publisher’s current notice and any relevant game update notes before buying or troubleshooting.
- Look beyond whether the game starts. Check whether the affected issue concerns a particular mode, input, camera function, controller or physical accessory, and note the date or software version covered by the notice.
Nintendo says its compatibility checks involve starting games and conducting limited testing. An official status label should not be read as proof that every level, mode, accessory, save transfer, online feature and future software version has been exhaustively tested. Nintendo also says it continues compatibility work with publishing and development partners, but that is not a promise that a particular unresolved game will receive a fix.

What to do if your game has a limitation
- If a specific mode needs an original Joy-Con, connect the required controller wirelessly; check that game’s listing for the exact requirement.
- If an accessory does not fit the Switch 2 console or Joy-Con 2, look for Nintendo’s title-specific guidance before attempting that setup.
- If a game is listed as unusable or has an in-game issue, check the publisher’s current support information and update notes. Do not assume a controller purchase will resolve a software problem.
