To update a game on Nintendo Switch 2, connect the console to the internet, highlight the game on HOME without opening it, press + or −, then select Software Update > Over the Internet. Game patches are separate from console system updates, and a Switch 2 enhancement may be either a free update or a paid upgrade pack.

How do I update games on Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo’s documented procedure for Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is also the practical route to check for a game update from HOME:

  1. Connect the console to the internet.
  2. On HOME, highlight the game’s software icon without launching it.
  3. Press + or − to open the software options and view its current version.
  4. Select Software Update, then Over the Internet.

Nintendo says updates may install automatically when the console is online and automatic software updates are enabled. The steps and automatic-update note are documented on its Welcome Tour update support page; for game-specific changes, check the publisher’s release notes as well.

How do I check a game’s version on Switch 2?

Highlight the game on HOME and press + or −. The software options show the version currently installed. If the game has a newer update available, choose Software Update > Over the Internet to check and download it.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

For example, Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour version 1.1.0 as released September 9, 2026. The update lets the VRR Slider tech demo be played in TV mode; that demonstration requires a VRR-compatible TV and an updated Nintendo Switch 2 dock. Nintendo also says the update fixes other gameplay issues without itemizing them. Nintendo’s version 1.1.0 notes say save data remains available after this update.

Is a game update the same as a Switch 2 system update?

No. A game update changes one title; a system update changes the console software. Nintendo Australia lists system software version 23.0.1, released October 1, 2026, as the latest version. It fixes an issue in version 23.0.0 that could make software take a long time to start, pause, or close. This is a console-level fix, not a game-by-game patch list. See Nintendo Australia’s system update information for the dated release details.

Does my Nintendo Switch game get a free Switch 2 upgrade?

Not automatically. Nintendo says some original Nintendo Switch games receive free updates that add content or improve performance on Switch 2, while other enhancements are offered as paid upgrades. The available path depends on the specific game, so check its official publisher information rather than assuming every compatible Switch game gets the same treatment. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains the free-update and paid-upgrade distinction.

Free update

A free update patches a compatible Switch game for Switch 2, potentially adding content or improving performance. It is distinct from buying a separate edition or paying for an upgrade pack.

Paid upgrade pack

Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor schedule describes upgrade packs for listed Switch 2 Edition games: owners of the packaged or downloadable Nintendo Switch version can purchase the pack to access the Switch 2 Edition. Eligibility and terms vary by title and region; the schedule warns that release dates can change and differ by region. Confirm current details with Nintendo or the game’s publisher.

Separately sold Switch 2 Edition

A Switch 2 Edition may also be sold as its own product. Do not assume that buying the original game entitles you to every edition’s extra content or that a particular upgrade pack is available in every region. Check the game’s current product and publisher pages for what is included and the applicable terms. Nintendo’s 2026 product schedule documents the upgrade-pack model, not a guarantee of current availability.

Will my Switch game work on Nintendo Switch 2?

Many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games are compatible, but compatibility is title-specific: some games may not be supported or may not work fully as intended. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information before relying on a particular title or feature. Nintendo directs players to the game’s publisher for details about third-party games. See Nintendo Australia’s compatibility guidance and Nintendo Support’s compatibility overview.

There is no single complete update list here: individual game patches, compatibility notes, and Switch 2 Edition terms change over time. For a specific game, verify its current version and release notes with its publisher, and check the region where you plan to play or purchase.

Do I need a storage card to update a game?

No storage-card requirement for updating a game is established by Nintendo’s guidance cited here. If you want to expand Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo says the console is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards; a standard microSD card cannot expand game storage. See Nintendo Australia’s storage and compatibility information.
