No—not on the evidence Nintendo has published. Nintendo says Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide during its first four days, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. That is a Nintendo-specific record, not proof that it broke every console sales record across all manufacturers and all of history.
What record did Nintendo actually claim?
Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. In a June 11 announcement, the company said more than 3.5 million units were sold worldwide in the first four days, June 5–8, based on Nintendo’s internal data. It called this the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. Nintendo’s launch announcement gives the timeframe, geography and scope of that claim.

Nintendo’s Japanese corporate release states the boundary especially clearly: “This is the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days.” The record is for Nintendo hardware, not every console maker. Nintendo’s corporate release uses that limited comparison.
Why “all console sales records in history” goes too far
A record claim only works when the comparison is defined. Nintendo’s statement is worldwide and covers four days, but its comparison group is Nintendo systems. It does not establish a record across Sony, Microsoft or other console makers, nor does it compare every historical launch using a consistent measure.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Scope: Nintendo’s claim compares Nintendo hardware, not all manufacturers.
- Time window: It covers the first four days, not a launch month, six months or lifetime sales.
- Geography: The reported launch figure is worldwide; a single-country launch result would not be directly comparable.
- Sales basis: Nintendo says the initial figure comes from internal data, while later reporting separately defines consumer sell-through. Those measures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Without a consistent cross-industry dataset for matching launch windows and sales measures, the available official evidence cannot support the universal “all console records” wording.
How Switch 2 sales developed after launch
Nintendo’s later figures provide context, but they describe different periods and measures from the four-day record.

| Figure | What it measures | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| More than 3.5 million units, June 5–8, 2025 | Worldwide sales in Switch 2’s first four days, according to Nintendo’s internal data. | The basis is not separately defined in the June 2025 release; the record claim is limited to Nintendo systems. Nintendo, June 2025. |
| More than 15 million by the fourth week of December 2025 | Consumer sell-through: sales to individual consumers, including Nintendo direct sales. | This is a consumer-sales measure with a December 2025 cutoff, not the four-day launch figure. Nintendo’s February 2026 presentation. |
| 23.68 million as of June 30, 2026 | Switch 2 lifetime hardware units worldwide. | A lifetime total, not a launch-window comparison. Nintendo’s hardware sales page. |
| 156.59 million as of June 30, 2026 | Original Nintendo Switch lifetime hardware units worldwide. | Useful historical context, but not a directly comparable first-four-days result. Nintendo’s hardware sales page. |
Nintendo’s February 2026 presentation also reports 17.37 million Switch 2 hardware units in its hardware-sales discussion through the third fiscal quarter. That figure and the more-than-15-million consumer sell-through total refer to different sales measures and cutoffs; they are not contradictory versions of one number. The presentation defines sell-through as sales to individual consumers, including through Nintendo direct-sales websites.

As of June 30, 2026, Nintendo lists Mario Kart World at 15.39 million software units and Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million. Nintendo’s software totals include bundled and downloaded software. These figures indicate game sales and distribution context; they are not evidence of a console sales record. Nintendo’s hardware and software sales page.

Verdict
Switch 2 did set a notable launch record by Nintendo’s account: more than 3.5 million units worldwide in four days, the fastest start for a Nintendo system. The evidence supports that specific claim. It does not establish that Switch 2 broke all console sales records in history.
