The October 2024 claim was speculation about a possible Nintendo Switch 2 announcement—not a confirmed retail launch date. Nintendo later revealed the system in January 2025, set its launch for June 5, 2025, and released it on that date.
What the “next week” claim actually meant
HotHardware published the claim on October 28, 2024, attributing it to Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe. The report said Lippe had suggested Nintendo might reveal its successor to the Switch the following week, ahead of the company’s November 5 shareholder meeting. HotHardware characterized the timing as speculation, not a confirmed schedule or verified inside leak. Read HotHardware’s October 28 report.

The distinction matters: in the headline, “launch” could sound like the console would be available to buy. The report’s reasoning concerned a possible announcement before investors might ask about the next console. The wording was attributed to a translated account of Lippe’s YouTube-stream comments; the stream itself and an independent translation are not established here, so the claim should be attributed to HotHardware rather than treated as a verified transcript.

- April 2, 2025: Nintendo announces June 5, 2025 as the launch date. Its announcement gives a U.S. launch MSRP of $449.99, a historical announced price rather than a current price. Nintendo’s launch-date announcement.
- June 5, 2025: Switch 2 launches. Nintendo says Mario Kart World launched alongside the system. Nintendo’s launch-day report.
- June 11, 2025: Nintendo reports that more than 3.5 million systems sold worldwide in the first four days after launch, based on the company’s internal data. This is Nintendo’s reported figure, not an independently measured estimate.
Why the prediction sounded plausible at the time
HotHardware connected the proposed timing to Nintendo’s November 5 shareholder meeting, where investors might ask about the successor console. The report also cited Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s May 2024 statement that the company would announce the successor within that fiscal year. That earlier commitment supplied a broad window, not a specific date for a reveal or retail release. HotHardware’s report includes the attribution and context.

Verdict
The “next week” story did not establish that Switch 2 would go on sale the following week. It was a speculative prediction of a possible reveal. Nintendo’s subsequent announcements set a different timeline: the console was introduced in January 2025 and launched on June 5, 2025.
