There is no reliable evidence here that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered became “softcore” or received a lower rating after reducing sexual content. The documented rating change concerns the original PC game: six weeks after release, its ESRB rating rose from Teen to Mature. The cited explanation involved gore and a locked-out art file—not a move toward less adult content.
What happened to the original Oblivion’s rating?
A review by Plugged In says the original PC release initially carried an ESRB Teen rating and changed to Mature six weeks after release. Its editor’s note attributes the change to mods that enabled more detailed blood and gore, as well as a locked-out art file that allowed topless female character models.
That account is specific to the original PC version. Plugged In also said the locked content was then inaccessible on Xbox 360. It does not establish that every platform or edition contained the same accessible material.
Does that prove Oblivion has gone “softcore”?
No. “Softcore” is an interpretive label, not an ESRB rating category, and the documented historical change went upward—from Teen to Mature. The available evidence does not verify a later reduction in sexual content or a lower rating for Oblivion Remastered.

A GameSpot listing identifies The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as a released edition and describes it as including the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions, plus additional downloadable content. That listing is not a rating-board record, so it does not settle the remaster’s rating or content descriptors.

Any claim that one version is more or less explicit needs to specify the edition, platform, region, and rating authority. It should also distinguish content available in an unmodified retail game from material accessible only through mods or locked files. A rating for the original PC release cannot, by itself, establish the rating or content of the remaster.
The cited sources document the original PC game’s historical rating change, but do not establish a current official ESRB record for the remaster or confirm a newer content change. They also do not establish ratings from authorities outside North America.
