Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition is most rewarding as an interactive time capsule, not as a newly modernized game. You watch camera feeds around a house and trigger traps to protect five guests from vampire-like intruders. The remaster adds substantial archival material, but the original’s short, repetitive, timing-based play remains intact. Critics value its history and camp in different measure; whether it works for you depends on how much you enjoy learning a fixed sequence.
What do you do in Night Trap?
Originally a Digital Pictures project begun in 1987 and released in 1992, Night Trap is a full-motion-video (FMV) game. You play a member of the Special Control Attack Team, monitoring rooms in the Martin home through security cameras. The aim is to protect five teenage guests from vampire-like intruders by activating traps at the right moment.
The main challenge is observation and timing: move among several camera feeds, recognize when an intruder appears, and trigger the corresponding trap. Story scenes unfold at the same time, so following the plot can compete with the job of watching for danger. The game’s sequence is largely fixed; learning when and where events happen is central to succeeding.

- Nintendo Switch
- Deleted scenes and two documentaries
- Theater mode, for watching story videos without managing camera feeds and traps
- Survivor mode
- Behind-the-scenes production images
- The previously unreleased Scene Of The Crime prototype
Nintendo Life reports that the playable prototype unlocks after a perfect game. The extras make the edition more compelling as a preservation package: Theater mode, in particular, lets you revisit scenes without the normal demands of play.
How do the reviews rate it?
Nintendo Life gave the Switch eShop version 7/10. Its August 24, 2018 review praised the clearer, larger video presentation and historical extras, while describing the game itself as linear, short, and repetitive. It said a perfect run takes around half an hour and framed repetition as a matter of learning the sequence. That score and technical assessment apply to the Switch version reviewed, not automatically to every port.

Other critic reactions collected on Metacritic reflect a broader disagreement. Push Square emphasized the release’s value as a historical document and genre curiosity, while noting that continued enjoyment depends on replaying the main story. GameSpew called it important to experience but not especially good; Destructoid also recognized its historical notoriety and argued that it merits recognition despite its flaws. The divide is largely about whether its archival interest and camp charm outweigh limited interaction and dated design.
Storefront user feedback is a separate, time-sensitive measure rather than a critic score. Steam showed 84% positive from 177 reviews in a snapshot accessed in 2026. The US PlayStation Store showed 4.56/5 from 358 ratings in a snapshot accessed in 2026. Those totals and averages can change.

Does the anniversary edition fix the game’s age?
It improves presentation, but it does not remake the underlying game. Nintendo Life said the Switch remaster was rebuilt from original footage tapes, producing a larger, clearer video window and smoother frame rate than compressed 1990s releases. The review also observed tearing and interference in some scenes because of damaged source tapes. On Switch specifically, it noted that handheld video could sometimes look janky or more compressed. These are observations about that port, not evidence that every platform has identical issues.
The essential trade-off remains: the edition gives you a more legible way to experience the footage and adds useful context, but you still spend much of your time switching feeds and timing traps against a repetitive sequence. If you want reactive action, branching choices, or a substantial modern campaign, the anniversary label should not be mistaken for a redesign.
