Red Candle Games says Low significantly decreases crash issues and strongly recommends it for systems with less than 16 GB of RAM. If you cannot reach the game’s options menu, skip to the checks below that do not require it.
1. Lower Graphics Quality
If the game opens far enough to reach its settings, go to Options → Graphics → Graphics Quality and choose Medium or Low. Red Candle Games Support says setting the quality to Low “significantly decreases crash issues” and strongly recommends Low if your system has less than 16 GB of RAM. This is the developer’s game-specific first step, not a guarantee that every crash will be fixed. (Red Candle Games Support, “Crashes & Black Screen Issues,” updated February 11, 2025)
If the game crashes before you can open Options, move on to the checks that can be done outside the game.
2. Verify the game files in Steam
A damaged or missing game file can prevent a Steam game from launching correctly. To check Nine Sols:

- Right-click Nine Sols and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the process to finish.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. A few files may fail validation because they are local configuration files; Steam notes that this can be normal. Its general guidance also suggests restarting Steam and your computer as part of troubleshooting. (Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files)
3. Reinstall Nine Sols
If lowering quality or verifying files does not help, uninstall and reinstall the game. Red Candle Games says reinstalling Nine Sols will not erase save files. Follow the developer’s instructions if you have a non-Steam installation or are unsure where your saves are stored. (Red Candle Games Support)

4. Check whether antivirus software is blocking the game
Red Candle Games lists antivirus interference as a possible issue. Check your antivirus software’s quarantine, blocked-app, or protection history for Nine Sols or its files. If you find a block, use the security software’s trusted-app controls rather than turning off protection altogether. The developer does not identify a particular antivirus product or setting, so the exact menu depends on your software.
5. Adjust refresh rate and disable FreeSync
The developer recommends adjusting the monitor refresh rate and disabling FreeSync as troubleshooting checks. Change one setting at a time, then relaunch the game to see whether the behavior changes. The support article does not specify a target refresh rate or a particular monitor-control path; those vary by display and graphics setup.

6. On a laptop, select the dedicated graphics card
Laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics may run a game on either GPU. Red Candle Games recommends making sure Nine Sols uses the dedicated graphics card. The exact selection path depends on your Windows and graphics-driver version, so look for the per-app graphics preference in your system or GPU software and assign Nine Sols to the high-performance GPU.
7. Disable Steam and other overlays
Temporarily turn off the Steam overlay and any overlays or in-game display features from other software, then test the game. If Nine Sols launches normally, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify whether one of them is involved. The developer lists disabling Steam and other overlays among its checks; it does not name a specific overlay as the cause.

8. Try the remaining software and device checks
Run Steam as administrator
Red Candle Games includes running Steam as administrator in its troubleshooting list. Close Steam, then reopen it using your operating system’s administrator option and launch the game again.
Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
The developer recommends installing the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Use Microsoft’s official distribution rather than downloading runtime files from an unfamiliar site. The support article does not specify a particular Redistributable version.

Disconnect unnecessary USB or Bluetooth devices
Unplug or disconnect peripherals you do not need for testing, then try launching Nine Sols. This can help determine whether a connected device is involved; reconnect devices afterward one at a time if the game starts.
Check whether your PC meets the listed requirements
Steam’s published requirements provide a baseline, not a promise that a system will be crash-free. These are the Windows specifications listed on the Nine Sols Steam page:

The Steam listing also gives macOS 10.13 with Apple M1 and 8 GB RAM as minimum requirements, and M1 Pro with 8 GB RAM as recommended. These platform specifications do not diagnose a crash by themselves. Steam’s general Windows launch guidance also recommends updating Windows and drivers, closing non-essential software, and checking requirements; those are platform-level checks rather than Nine Sols-specific fixes. If Nine Sols still crashes
Contact Red Candle Games Support if the developer’s checks do not resolve the issue. Include your operating system and PC specifications so support can assess your configuration. The developer’s support article links to its contact resources: Crashes & Black Screen Issues.
