Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XVI, asked PC players not to make or install mods he considered offensive or inappropriate in a September 2024 interview, just before the game’s PC release. He made the appeal after declining to suggest a specific mod, saying that could be taken as a request.
What Yoshida said about Final Fantasy XVI mods
PC Gamer asked director Hiroshi Takai what goofy mods he would like to see in Final Fantasy XVI. Yoshida answered instead. He explained: “If we said ‘It’d be great if someone made xyz,’ it might come across as a request, so I’ll avoid mentioning any specifics here!” He then added: “The only thing I will say is that we definitely don’t want to say anything offensive or inappropriate, so please don’t make or install anything like that.” PC Gamer published the exchange on September 16, 2024.

The wording was a public appeal about what players should create or install, not a list of prohibited mod types. Yoshida did not identify examples or define “offensive or inappropriate” in the interview.
Why the request came up before the PC launch
Final Fantasy XVI first launched for PS5 in June 2023, then arrived on PC on September 17, 2024, through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The interview’s question about mods was therefore asked in the context of the upcoming PC release. GameSpot also reported Yoshida’s request ahead of launch; Video Games Chronicle reported the release timeline.

Was this an official mod policy?
The interview establishes Yoshida’s expressed preference, but it does not announce a formal Final Fantasy XVI mod policy or describe an enforcement system. It also does not show that the request prevented any mods from being made or installed. The cited coverage provides no verified count or reliable catalog of Final Fantasy XVI mods.
Two details that are easy to confuse
The 7.6-million figure is for a different game
Video Games Chronicle reported more than 7.6 million downloads for mods for Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2024. That figure is about a different game; it is not a mod count for Final Fantasy XVI.

Yoshida’s later comments concerned Final Fantasy XIV
In an official Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone statement published August 28, 2025, Yoshida discussed his personal stance on mods in that game: tolerance for personal use, with users responsible for what they download and a warning against negatively affecting the game, its services, or intended design. It was a separate, later statement—not a formal Final Fantasy XVI policy or a replacement for his 2024 appeal. Read Yoshida’s statement on the official Lodestone.

New Zealand’s Classification Office described Final Fantasy XVI as a computer game and gave it an unrestricted M classification, suitable for mature audiences aged 16 and over, noting violence and offensive language. That record dates to January 2023 and concerns the game’s classification; it does not define what Yoshida meant by “offensive or inappropriate” mods. See the New Zealand Classification Office record.
