What happened to the Marvel Rivals team?
On February 18, 2025, Marvel Rivals director Thaddeus Sasser posted that his team had been laid off after helping deliver the game. GameSpot reported his post and NetEase’s comment: GameSpot’s February 18 report.
NetEase confirmed a reduction in a Seattle-based design team that supported the game as part of a broader global design function. The company described the change as an adjustment to the development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency, according to Game Developer’s February 19 report.
Was the whole Marvel Rivals development team laid off?
No. NetEase distinguished the Seattle design-team reduction from the game’s core development team, which it said was based in Guangzhou and led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen. The reported change should therefore be described as a reduction of the Seattle design group, not a layoff of every developer working on Marvel Rivals. What reason did NetEase give?
NetEase said it adjusted the team structure “for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game.” That is the company’s stated explanation; the available reporting does not establish a separate cause or prove that a particular financial motive drove the decision.
How many people were affected?
The cited reports do not establish a definitive number of affected employees. Sasser’s post referred to his team, while NetEase’s statement confirmed a reduction in the Seattle design group without giving a headcount. Later staffing status is likewise not established by those reports.

Did NetEase say Marvel Rivals would continue?
At the time, NetEase said it would continue investing in the game and deliver additional characters, maps, features, and content. That was the company’s statement in February 2025; it does not by itself establish the game’s current investment level or staffing arrangements. The story drew attention because Marvel Rivals had launched as a free-to-play action game for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, as described in contemporaneous GeekWire reporting.
