Overwatch had an extraordinary first year by Blizzard’s own measures: it launched worldwide on May 24, 2016, drew more than 7 million players in its first week, and passed 30 million players in less than a year. Activision Blizzard called it the company’s fastest game to reach 25 million users and, by May 2017, its eighth billion-dollar franchise. Those milestones make “one of the best first years ever” a persuasive retrospective—but they do not establish an all-industry record.
Overwatch began with unusual reach
Before launch, Overwatch’s open beta attracted more than 9.7 million players, according to Activision Blizzard’s May 24, 2016 release. The game then launched worldwide that day for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

A large beta does not prove that every participant would buy or keep playing the finished game. It does show that Blizzard had already drawn substantial attention to a new franchise before release.
The first-week figures showed both audience and engagement
On June 2, Blizzard reported more than 7 million players and over 119 million combined hours played. Its release also described a 21-hero roster at that point. These are company-reported figures: “players” should not be read as paid copies sold, and combined hours indicate accumulated play rather than how long an individual player spent in the game.

The figures nevertheless suggest that Overwatch converted launch attention into substantial early activity. The scale of the first-week audience and the hours played together make a stronger case for momentum than either number alone.
Blizzard’s 25-million-user milestone puts the launch in company context
Activision Blizzard’s 2016 annual report described Overwatch as Blizzard’s most successful new intellectual-property launch to that point and its fastest game to reach 25 million users. That is a notable internal comparison: the company was saying this new Blizzard franchise had outpaced its own earlier launches to the milestone.

It is not an independently audited ranking of every game released across the industry. The company’s wording supports calling Overwatch one of Blizzard’s most successful new-game launches; it does not settle how it ranks against every other franchise or game.
By the first anniversary, it had become a major franchise
In its May 4, 2017 quarterly-results release, Activision Blizzard reported more than 30 million global players in less than a year and said Overwatch had become the eighth billion-dollar franchise in its portfolio. The player milestone and billion-dollar-franchise designation are distinct measures: one reports audience reach, while the other signals commercial scale. Neither statement gives a comparable cross-industry first-year revenue ranking.

Blizzard marked the anniversary with a Game of the Year Edition announcement on May 23, 2017. The Game Awards’ 2016 archive lists Overwatch as Game of the Year, adding major recognition to the first year’s audience and business milestones.

The strongest case for the phrase is specific: Overwatch had a huge prelaunch beta, rapid early audience growth, a company-record pace to 25 million users, more than 30 million reported players within a year, billion-dollar-franchise status, and the Game Awards’ top honor. On the evidence available, that is an exceptional first year in Blizzard’s history.

A broader claim that it was among the best first years in all gaming history would require consistent comparisons with other new franchises—for example, equivalent player milestones, time periods, revenue measures, and award criteria. The cited company releases do not provide that dataset. The superlative is therefore best treated as an evaluative judgment, not a verified industry-wide ranking.
