They called the perceived resemblance “Kirikofication.” The phrase came from community discussion, not Blizzard, and the debate was not unanimous. Blizzard game director Aaron Keller reportedly said the team planned to update Anran’s 3D model during Season 1; official patch notes through April 14 document gameplay changes but do not confirm that the visual update shipped.
What players meant by “Kirikofication”
“Kirikofication” was shorthand used by some players for what they saw as a familiar face design: Anran’s in-game appearance seemed too similar to Kiriko and, in some comparisons, Juno. A February 5 post on the Blizzard Overwatch forum framed the concern as “Its the Kirikofication.” Other commenters said the game model looked too much like Juno or did not match Anran’s more distinctive appearance in comics and stories.
The term was not an official Blizzard label, and the forum discussion included disagreement. Some players accepted the design or considered differences between stylized game models and animated or illustrated depictions normal. The available coverage does not establish how representative either reaction was; it offers no reliable statistic for how many players objected.
Why the model drew comparisons
Distinctiveness from other heroes
Critics judged the model against the recognizable faces of existing Overwatch characters. Their complaint was not simply that Anran shared a broad art style with the roster, but that she seemed insufficiently distinct from characters such as Kiriko and Juno. GamesRadar+ described the discussion as a “same face syndrome” complaint, reflecting the way some players interpreted the resemblance—not an objective finding that the models were identical.

Continuity with earlier portrayals
Players also compared the game model with Anran’s earlier comic and story depictions, which some saw as giving her a more assertive or distinctive appearance. The concern was that the playable model did not carry that impression forward. Blizzard’s launch description introduces Anran as a confident, hardworking Damage hero and Wuyang’s older sister; the dispute was about whether the model conveyed that character as well as the earlier depictions did.
How appearance communicates personality
The disagreement also touched on whether a character’s face and expression should visually reinforce her personality. These are interpretive criteria, not measurable tests: one player may see a design as fitting Overwatch’s style, while another may find it generic or inconsistent with the character’s established presentation.

What Anran’s voice actor and Blizzard’s game director said
In reporting published February 16, 2026, 4Gamer said Anran voice actor Fareeha Andersen had publicly supported the criticism. Andersen reportedly said she had hoped for a design that challenged familiar beauty standards and understood fans who felt the model did not fit Anran’s character.
4Gamer also reported that game director Aaron Keller posted a video message on the official Overwatch account on February 10. Keller said the team was discussing how to bring Anran closer to the “strong older sister” vision and planned to update the 3D model during Season 1. That was a reported commitment to make a change, not confirmation that it was completed.

What the official updates confirm
Blizzard’s February 13, 2026 retail patch notes document Anran’s addition to the Damage roster and gameplay adjustments. The April 14, 2026 retail patch notes describe further combat tuning. Neither set of notes confirms the status or contents of the promised visual-model update, so the available official patch documentation does not establish that the revision shipped.

The forum thread and press coverage show that the design prompted visible online criticism, but they do not amount to a representative poll. The same thread contains neutral and dissenting responses, and likes, reposts, or selected comments cannot establish how the wider player base felt. “Fans outraged” captures one side of the conversation; the evidence supports a public argument, not a consensus.
