Brendan Greene’s PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions announced two connected projects: Preface: Undiscovered World, a free technology demo for the studio’s Melba engine, and Prologue: Go Wayback!, a single-player open-world survival game. The studio says Preface demonstrates real-time generation of an Earth-scale world on a user’s GPU; that is the studio’s description, not an independently verified performance benchmark. Its longer-term plan also includes Project Artemis, described as a planned massive multiplayer sandbox.
What are Preface and Prologue?
They are related projects with different purposes. In its December 5, 2024 announcement, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions presented Preface: Undiscovered World as an immersive technology demo showcasing Melba, the studio’s proprietary engine. The studio says Melba is intended to generate an Earth-scale world in real time on the user’s GPU. Preface is an early look at that technology, not the survival game described on Steam. Read the studio announcement.
Prologue: Go Wayback! is the playable game: Steam describes it as a single-player, open-world emergent survival roguelike. Each run generates a 64 km² wilderness on the player’s PC, where the challenge involves navigation, weather, food and water, and reaching a Weather Tower. See the current Steam listing.
How do the two projects differ?
| Project | Purpose and scope | What the player does | Evidence and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preface: Undiscovered World | Technology demo for Melba; the studio describes its world-generation goal as Earth-scale. | Explore a real-time generated world in the demo. | Described in the studio’s December 5, 2024 announcement; the Earth-scale capability is a studio claim, not an independently verified performance result. |
| Prologue: Go Wayback! | Single-player survival roguelike; Steam says each run generates a 64 km² wilderness. | Navigate and manage survival needs while trying to reach a Weather Tower. | Current Steam store listing, accessed October 8, 2026; listed as free-to-play, with an Early Access date of November 20, 2025, and a June 17, 2026 release date. |
The scales are not directly comparable: Preface’s Earth-scale description concerns the demo’s technology ambition, while Prologue’s 64 km² figure describes the generated map for a game run. Neither claim establishes how well either project performs on a given PC.

What is Project Artemis?
PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions described Project Artemis as a planned massive multiplayer sandbox that would build on technological advances tested and refined through Preface and Prologue. That is an announced direction, not confirmation that Artemis has launched or that all of its intended capabilities have been demonstrated. The studio’s announcement lays out this relationship between the projects, but does not establish a launch date. Studio announcement.

The studio’s announcement describes Melba as technology for real-time Earth-scale world generation on a user’s GPU. The reviewed sources do not provide an independent benchmark or controlled performance test confirming that claim. Treat “Earth-scale” as the studio’s description of the demo’s ambition, not a measured result or a guarantee about performance on particular hardware.
