PCSX2 needs a PlayStation 2 BIOS to run games, but the emulator does not include one: the BIOS is proprietary software, and PCSX2 says there is no open-source substitute. The supported route is to run a BIOS dumper on a PS2 you own, then transfer the resulting files to your computer. A BIOS download site is not an official alternative. PCSX2’s BIOS guide explains the process.
Why PCSX2 requires a PS2 BIOS
The BIOS is console software that PCSX2 needs in order to operate. The PCSX2 Project says: “These files are proprietary software and must therefore be dumped from your own console.” It also states that “PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS, and no open-source alternative exists.” PCSX2 does not provide BIOS files with the emulator.
That is why searching for a “PS2 BIOS download” does not lead to an official PCSX2 download. The project’s setup route is to dump the BIOS files from your own PlayStation 2, rather than obtain an image from an unofficial download site.
What you need before dumping the BIOS
- A PlayStation 2 console you own. The method you can use depends on the console model.
- A way to run homebrew software on the console. PCSX2 most strongly recommends FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot; some slim models that do not work with FreeMcBoot may suit Fortuna.
- The BIOS dumper recommended by PCSX2, biosdrain, and a way to launch it through uLaunchELF or its continuation, wLaunchELF.
- For the recommended USB transfer route, a flash drive with an MBR partition table and FAT32 file system.
PCSX2 describes FreeMcBoot and FreeDVDBoot as non-permanent software modifications. Its official guide provides model-specific compatibility notes; check those notes for your console before choosing a method. Read the current PCSX2 BIOS guide.

Choose a console preparation method
| Method | When it may fit | Materials and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeMcBoot | PCSX2’s primary recommendation for many consoles. | Requires a FreeMcBoot memory card. PCSX2 says it works with all fat models and most slim models, with its guide noting an exception for the newest models. Check the exact model caveat in the guide. |
| FreeDVDBoot | Another primary recommended softmod route, if the model is compatible. | Requires a blank DVD burned with the ISO matching the PS2 model. Compatibility varies across many slim and some fat models. PCSX2 says a DVD-R burned slowly, such as at 4X, is generally reliable. |
| Fortuna | May suit some slim consoles that do not work with FreeMcBoot. | Requires a Fortuna memory card; PCSX2 characterizes this option as harder to find and use. |
| Disc-swap exploit | Advanced users. | Requires a PS2 game disc, blank DVD, swap tool, and software. PCSX2 lists it but does not recommend it. |
| Modchip | Experienced solderers who want changes beyond dumping a BIOS. | Requires a modchip, wires, documentation, tools, and soldering. PCSX2 describes this as high risk and says an active modchip can cause an incomplete or corrupted BIOS dump; disable it for the dump. |
These compatibility and risk descriptions are PCSX2’s guidance, not independent tests. The guide also lists approximate accessory figures, but does not provide a page publication date: around 15 USD for a FreeMcBoot memory card, around 15 USD for a Fortuna memory card, and 10–60 USD for a modchip. Treat these as undated guide estimates, not verified current retail prices.
Dump the BIOS to a USB flash drive
Prepare the flash drive
PCSX2 recommends USB transfer for most users. The drive should use an MBR partition table and FAT32 file system. Formatting erases the selected drive, so verify that you have selected the correct device and back up anything you need before formatting it.

PS2 software may not detect every USB drive. If uLaunchELF does not see yours, try another drive; PCSX2 suggests preferring USB 2.0. USB transfers on the PS2 are slow, so the process may take time.
Run biosdrain on the PS2
- Use your chosen compatible method to prepare the console and launch uLaunchELF or wLaunchELF.
- Copy
biosdrain.elfto storage the console can access. - In uLaunchELF or wLaunchELF, browse to the file and run it.
- Wait for biosdrain’s completion message before removing the storage device.
- Connect the device to your computer and copy the dumped BIOS files onto the computer.
PCSX2 recommends biosdrain and says it does not alter the console. Follow the complete official BIOS dumping instructions for the files and model-specific preparation details.

Check the dump and select it in PCSX2
If you suspect that the dump is incomplete or corrupted, PCSX2’s guide describes checking its SHA1 hash against ReDump’s BIOS hash data. A matching hash is an integrity check; it does not establish that the BIOS was obtained from your own console. The BIOS guide covers the verification details and the subsequent PCSX2 setup.
BIOS dumping is separate from preparing game discs
A BIOS file is not a game, and dumping one does not create a game backup. PCSX2’s separate disc guide explains how to make backups of PS2 discs on Windows, macOS, and Linux; it describes PS2 discs as unencrypted DVDs and CDs. See PCSX2’s disc-dumping guide for that distinct process.

Copyright and PCSX2’s policy
PCSX2’s official-platform policy expects users seeking support or contributing through an official platform to own a legally obtained copy of any game they play and a PS2 BIOS dumped from a PS2 device they own. The project also asks users to review the copyright laws that apply in their jurisdiction. This is PCSX2’s platform policy, not a universal legal ruling about every jurisdiction or circumstance. Read the PCSX2 trademark and copyright policy and check your local law.
