Check whether Steam or one lobby is the problem

Check Steam’s service status using Steam Support’s network troubleshooting guidance. If Steam services are affected, wait and try again later rather than changing your router.

Try joining a different lobby or server. If other lobbies work, the problem may be with the original lobby, server, or its authentication path—not your home network. Steam recommends checking platform status and trying other servers before assuming your router is at fault: Steam Support’s server troubleshooting advice.

Check whether other Steam games or services connect on the same network. If they also fail, that points toward a broader Steam or network issue; if PAYDAY 2 alone fails, continue with the game and firewall checks below.

Refresh Steam and PAYDAY 2
Fully exit Steam, reopen it, and launch PAYDAY 2 again. Restarting Steam is an older community suggestion for Crime.net connection problems, not a current official diagnosis or guaranteed repair. The game-specific discussion is in this historical PAYDAY 2 community thread.
Test the local network connection
Try Ethernet if you use Wi-Fi or powerline
If practical, connect the computer directly to the router with Ethernet and retry. Steam Support says, “Wireless and powerline connections can cause intermittent failures due to interference.” This is a diagnostic test: if wired works while Wi-Fi does not, the wireless link may be involved, but Ethernet is not a guaranteed PAYDAY 2 fix. Look for network restrictions or instability
If connection failures continue, check that the router and network link are stable and that other applications are not disrupting connectivity. School, university, workplace, proxy, or other restricted networks may block ports Steam needs. Steam also notes that individual games can require additional ports; that general guidance is not a PAYDAY 2 port-forwarding recipe.
Check firewall permissions
Steam Support notes, “Many Steam issues can be caused by a firewall, anti-virus, or a problem with your router or internet connection.” Confirm that your firewall allows Steam and PAYDAY 2, particularly if the problem began after a client or game update. Follow Steam’s firewall FAQ to review permissions.

If you temporarily turn off a firewall to test whether it is blocking the connection, turn it back on immediately afterward. Configure appropriate app permissions instead of leaving the firewall disabled.
Try older community suggestions cautiously
A historical, community-maintained PAYDAY 2 thread also suggests rebooting the computer or router, flushing DNS, and verifying game files. These are low-risk troubleshooting attempts for some situations, but the thread is old and does not establish that any of them fixes current PAYDAY 2 connection failures. Follow the thread’s context at the community discussion of Crime.net connection issues; do not treat its labels such as “Waiting to Respond” as official diagnostic categories.

Do not assume NAT is the cause based on a connecting hang alone. Steamworks describes general relay and peer-networking capabilities, but that does not establish which networking backend a current PAYDAY 2 build uses or explain an individual connection failure: Steamworks networking documentation.

Do not apply a PAYDAY 2 port-forwarding list unless it comes from a current, title-specific authoritative source. Steam’s general advice that some games need additional ports does not identify PAYDAY 2’s current requirements.
