Microsoft announced on October 14, 2024, that Craig Duncan, then head of Rare, would succeed retiring Alan Hartman as head of Xbox Game Studios. The transition was announced for November 2024, with Rare veterans Joe Neate and Jim Horth set to co-manage the studio. A later report in June 2026 said Duncan was stepping down, so his role as of October 8, 2026, is not verified by the available dated information.
What changed when Duncan was promoted?
Duncan moved from leading Rare to overseeing Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft’s group of game development studios. The October 14, 2024 announcement described him as Hartman’s successor as Hartman retired. Windows Central reported that Duncan’s transition was intended to take effect in November 2024; that was the announced timing, not a separately confirmed effective date. Windows Central’s October 14, 2024 report also said Rare’s Joe Neate and Jim Horth would co-manage the studio.
What was Duncan expected to focus on?
Windows Central reported that Matt Booty’s staff memo described Duncan’s remit as helping studios deliver high-quality, differentiated games, building successful franchises, reaching more players, and investing in new intellectual property. The memo’s language outlined the intended priorities of the appointment; it does not establish that those goals were achieved. The report quoting Booty’s memo did not reproduce a memo retrieved directly.
What happened to Duncan’s role later?
On June 15, 2026, Windows Central reported, citing The Game Business and an internal staff email, that Duncan was stepping down. The same report said Booty would oversee developers on an interim basis while Microsoft sought a replacement. This is secondary reporting, and the available dated material does not establish Duncan’s status on October 8, 2026. Windows Central’s June 15, 2026 account is the dated report on the departure.

An NVIDIA announcement excerpt identifies Duncan as head of Xbox Game Studios, but the excerpt available here has no visible publication date. It therefore cannot resolve the conflict with the dated June 2026 report, and should not be treated as confirmation of his current role. NVIDIA’s announcement also quotes him discussing player choice.

In an official Xbox podcast discussion about making games available on more platforms, Duncan said: “I think it’s good for gamers, I think it’s good for our studios. Our studios make amazing games, and we want to give those games the chance to reach the broadest audience possible.” That provides context for his public view on platform availability, not evidence of the appointment’s results.
