Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Review: Is It the New King of 4K Gaming?

The RTX 5090 posts large gains over the RTX 4090 in two specific 4K ray-tracing tests, but those results are not a universal native-rendering average. Here’s how to judge its DLSS 4 claims, value, power needs, and fit.

The GeForce RTX 5090 is a formidable 4K graphics card, but “new king” depends on what you mean by performance. Independent testing shows substantial gains over the RTX 4090 in two specific 4K ray-tracing comparisons; it does not establish a universal advantage across games or native rendering. NVIDIA’s larger performance claims rely on particular games and features such as DLSS 4, so buyers should separate conventionally rendered frames from AI-generated ones.

What the RTX 5090 offers

NVIDIA announced the desktop RTX 5090 for January 30, 2025, with a launch starting price of $1,999. That is historical launch MSRP, not a current retail quote. NVIDIA listed add-in-card partners including ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY, and ZOTAC. NVIDIA’s launch announcement introduced the card as a Blackwell-generation flagship.

Its headline specifications are 32 GB of GDDR7 memory, 1,792 GB/s of memory bandwidth, 21,760 CUDA cores, 680 fifth-generation Tensor Cores, and 170 fourth-generation RT Cores, according to NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications. Those resources target demanding high-resolution gaming and workloads that benefit from ray tracing or AI features, but specifications alone do not determine how much faster a card will be in a particular game.

How much faster is it than the RTX 4090?

The clearest independent figures in the available testing are game- and setting-specific 4K ray-tracing results from GamersNexus. They show a meaningful generational uplift in those tests, not a blanket percentage applicable to every game or to native rasterization.

Resident Evil 4, 4K ray tracing with FSR as specified in the chart title 210 FPS average 160 FPS average 31% generational improvement, as reported by GamersNexus

The Resident Evil 4 comparison includes FSR, so it should not be read as a pure native-rendering result. The results support the conclusion that the RTX 5090 can deliver a sizable uplift in selected demanding 4K ray-tracing workloads. They do not establish an all-games average, a native-rendering average, or a performance lead in every title.

What NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 claims mean for 4K

NVIDIA says the RTX 5090 can outperform the RTX 4090 by “up to 2x,” but that is a vendor claim rather than a universal independent benchmark result. The company’s comparisons pair Blackwell hardware with DLSS 4 and name particular games and feature settings in its launch materials.

  • [Quad-Fan Force, Vapor Chamber, Phase-Change Thermal Pad] Designed for sustained performance under heavy loads with quad-fan cooling, a patented vapor chamber, and a phase-change GPU thermal pad to help lower temps and reduce hotspots.
  • [DP 2.1b x3, HDMI 2.1b x2, Bundle GPU Holder] Multi-display ready with up to 4 displays and up to 7680 x 4320 max digital resolution, plus an included GPU Holder to help reduce GPU sag and improve long-term build stability.

DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can generate up to three frames for each frame conventionally rendered by the GPU, according to NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 description. Generated frames increase the displayed frame count, but they are not additional frames rendered through the full conventional game-rendering pipeline. When comparing cards, check whether a reported FPS figure is native, upscaled, ray-traced, or includes frame generation; those modes answer different questions.

Is the RTX 5090 worth it for 4K gaming?

It is most compelling for players who want the highest-end 4K performance, use demanding ray tracing, and have a display and games capable of taking advantage of the added output. The evidence here supports a substantial uplift in the two cited ray-tracing tests, but it does not show that every game—or native rendering generally—runs 31% to 37% faster than on an RTX 4090.

Value depends heavily on the price available to you. NVIDIA’s $1,999 figure was the launch starting price in 2025; current US stock and street prices are not established here. Before buying, compare the actual model price against that historical MSRP and decide whether the gains in your own games justify the premium over alternatives you can currently purchase.

  • Prioritize conventional rendering results if you want to compare GPU-rendered performance directly.
  • For ray-tracing games, look for results using the settings and resolution you actually play.
  • Count DLSS upscaling and Multi Frame Generation as separate features, rather than treating generated output as equivalent to native rendering.
  • Consider whether your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate can make use of the performance.

Power supply and case fit

NVIDIA’s Founders Edition Quick Start Guide specifies a minimum 1000 W system power supply and card clearance of 304 × 137 × 61 mm. It recommends one additional slot of clearance in front of the fans for better airflow. These dimensions and connection directions are for the Founders Edition; partner cards can differ, so check the exact card’s own manual and measurements.

Power connections for the Founders Edition

The guide specifies either at least four independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables used with the supplied adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. NVIDIA instructs Founders Edition owners to use the included adapter and make sure the 16-pin plug is fully inserted and seated flush. Consult the RTX 5090 Founders Edition Quick Start Guide and your power supply’s documentation before installation.

Check physical clearance before buying

  1. Measure the available card space in your case and compare it with the exact RTX 5090 model’s published dimensions.
  2. Check space for the power cable and connector as well as the card itself; the Founders Edition guide’s dimensions do not replace checking your case and cable arrangement.
  3. For the Founders Edition, leave the guide’s recommended additional slot clearance in front of the fans where possible.
  4. Verify that your PSU meets the requirement and supports one of the specified power connection configurations.

Cooling and design notes

GamersNexus describes the Founders Edition as a two-slot, dual-flow-through design. Its review also reports NVIDIA’s use of liquid metal and a triple-walled gasket to handle 575 W or more. Those are design details, not evidence of long-term reliability or a guarantee that every partner model uses the same construction.
