The console arrived with a 2TB SSD and higher launch pricing than the standard PS5, but it is disc-less and its headline performance features apply to selected games—not every PS5 title.

Does PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. PS5 Pro launched without an optical disc drive. Sony said buyers could add a separately sold PS5 Disc Drive. With the drive installed, the console supports compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. Sony’s PS5 Pro setup guide explains how to use the add-on drive.
What performance improvements did Sony promise?
Sony’s September 2024 announcement compared PS5 Pro with the then-current PS5, describing a GPU with 67% more compute units and memory 28% faster. Sony said those changes could enable gameplay rendering up to 45% faster. It also claimed ray tracing could run at double, and sometimes triple, the ray-casting speed. These are Sony’s stated comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Sony’s announcement outlines the figures.
What is PSSR?
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-driven image upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony presented it as one of the console’s graphics features, alongside its upgraded GPU and ray tracing. Sony lead architect Mark Cerny later described the company’s deeper collaboration with AMD on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay in a December 2024 technical post.

Do all PS5 games benefit from PS5 Pro?
No. Sony says enhanced features are available only in selected games, and what improves varies from game to game. PS5 Pro’s Game Boost feature can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games playable on the console, but that eligibility is not a guarantee that every game will run or look better. Sony’s announcement describes the feature and its limits.
What should buyers weigh when comparing PS5 Pro configurations?
The meaningful differences are the console’s launch configuration, how you play games, and whether the titles you care about use Pro-specific enhancements. The figures below describe Sony’s 2024 launch announcement; they do not establish present-day prices or the current enhancement support of individual games.
| Consideration | PS5 Pro at launch | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, or ¥119,980 JPY including tax | These were 2024 launch MSRPs; current retail prices were not stated in Sony’s launch materials. |
| Disc playback | Disc-less console; separate PS5 Disc Drive available | Factor in a separate drive if you use physical games or want disc playback. |
| Included storage | 2TB SSD | Sony also documents optional M.2 SSD expansion and transfer from an existing PS5. |
| Game enhancements | Features vary by supported game | Check support for the specific games you play; the Pro label does not mean every title gets identical improvements. |
| Performance features | Sony claims faster rendering, ray tracing, and PSSR | These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent test results. |
Sony says existing PS5 accessories including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore are compatible with PS5 Pro. Its setup guide also explains how to move an M.2 SSD installed in an existing PS5 to PS5 Pro. The same guide covers console setup, ports, data transfer, and regional Wi-Fi 7 support; Sony qualifies Wi-Fi 7 availability to territories that support the standard.
