The Rusty Crank is in a wall slot on the west side of Cedarbrook Apartments 1F. Use it to open the nearby door first, then take the crank from the slot. Reported uses are at Cedarbrook Apartments 1F, Cedarbrook Apartments 2F Terrace, and the Sewage Facility Storeroom.
Where to find the Rusty Crank
Go to Cedarbrook Apartments 1F and locate the door that requires the crank. The item is in a wall slot on the west side of the room. The location reference lists that same slot in Standard Modern, Standard Classic, and Insanity modes; it does not establish whether every other detail is identical between modes. Evil Resource’s Cedarbrook Apartments 1F map reference identifies the location and its listed modes.
How to obtain it safely
- Before interacting, prepare for a possible enemy encounter. A walkthrough warns that cranking can cause enemies to spawn. Evil Resource’s Rusty Crank entry includes this caution.
- At the Cedarbrook Apartments 1F door, operate the crank to open the door.
- After opening it, take the Rusty Crank from the west-side wall slot.
The sequence matters: the item is retrieved after it has been used on the initial door. Game8’s East Raccoon City walkthrough also describes using the interaction and acquiring the crank afterward.
Where to use the Rusty Crank
| Location | Door it opens |
|---|---|
| Cedarbrook Apartments 1F | The door leading to the Foyer |
| Cedarbrook Apartments 2F Terrace | The door leading to Access to 3F |
| Sewage Facility Storeroom | The door leading to Side Street Access |
These three uses are listed by the Resident Evil Wiki item entry, Evil Resource, and Gamer Guides’ Rusty Crank database entry. The Cedarbrook Apartments doors are part of the apartment route; the Sewage Facility Storeroom door is the separately reported route to Side Street Access.

Item description wording
Secondary references do not agree on the English inventory description, and no official Capcom text source is established here. The Resident Evil Wiki gives: “A key to the back gate. It’s in very poor condition.” Evil Resource instead gives: “Extremely rusty from lying abandoned for years. Should work well enough in a pinch.” Treat these as quotations attributed to their respective references, not as verified current in-game wording.
