Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was a French painter and one of Impressionism’s founding members. He is known for lively scenes of modern life, landscapes, portraits and figures, but his career was not confined to the loose, light-filled approach associated with early Impressionism: later, he put greater emphasis on drawing, balanced composition and classical models.

Who was Renoir?

Born in Limoges in 1841, Renoir first trained as a porcelain painter. He later studied drawing with Charles Gleyre and met Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille in that artistic circle. He and Monet also painted outdoors together at Argenteuil after the Franco-Prussian War. The National Gallery of Art identifies Renoir as one of Impressionism’s founding members and notes that he took part in the group’s first exhibition in 1874. What is Renoir known for?

Renoir painted contemporary social life as well as landscapes, portraits, dancers and bathers. His subjects include people spending time together in the city and outdoors. The National Gallery of Art highlights his vivid landscapes and paintings of women; Musée d’Orsay frames his scenes of couples, friends, conversation and shared meals as images of social connection and of the painter’s era. That is the museum’s interpretation, not a formula that defines every work.

  • Pont Neuf, Paris (1872) offers an early view of urban life.
  • A Girl with a Watering Can (1876) is a well-known figure painting from his early period.
  • The Skiff (La Yole) is a sunlit Seine scene with motifs associated with Impressionism.
  • The Umbrellas presents a crowded Paris street and was painted in two stages.
  • Girl with a Hoop (1885), Woman with a Cat (c. 1875) and Young Spanish Woman with a Guitar (1898) show the range of his subjects and dates.

How did Renoir’s style change?

Renoir’s style developed rather than following a clean break from Impressionism. In the late 1870s, he increasingly looked to classical and Renaissance art. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum says he stopped participating in the Impressionist exhibitions after the third exhibition in 1877 and returned to the official Salon from 1878. It describes his compositions as becoming more balanced, with drawing taking on greater importance. Travels in Italy brought Raphael and Ingres into his later artistic thinking. The National Gallery of Art likewise describes him as distancing himself from the movement by 1878 and drawing inspiration from classical and Renaissance art.

His later subjects included recurring bathers, alongside other figures and portraits. The National Gallery, London, also notes that Renoir began moving away from some Impressionist landscape techniques in works associated with his 1883 visit to Guernsey. These accounts point to changes over time, not the disappearance of every Impressionist quality. No single checklist of visual traits defines all of Renoir’s paintings.
