By January 2022, Xbox Series X|S shipments had topped 12 million worldwide, according to an estimate from Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad—not an official Microsoft count of consoles sold to players. That distinction matters: shipments to retailers are not the same measure as consumer sales, and the figure is historical, not a current total.
What the 12 million figure measures
Ahmad shared the estimate on January 11, 2022, describing the combined Xbox Series X|S total as “over 12 million shipped according to our estimates.” TweakTown reported Ahmad’s estimate; it was not a Microsoft-confirmed tally of purchases by consumers.
Contemporary coverage noted that Microsoft did not announce Xbox hardware unit sales, leaving third-party estimates to fill the gap. The headline wording “sold” therefore overstates what Ahmad’s attributed figure establishes: it is an estimate of worldwide shipments, with no model-by-model breakdown provided.
What other sales figures showed at the time
Separate UK retail data offered a regional snapshot, not a calculation underlying the global estimate. GameSpot’s January 12, 2022 report, relaying GfK data reported by GamesIndustry.biz, said the Xbox Series X|S family had passed one million UK sales since its November 2020 launch.

- In the UK, December 2021 was the family’s biggest month since launch.
- UK sales rose 108% month over month in December 2021, with improved Series X stock cited as the reason.
Those numbers describe UK consumer sales in a specific period. They should not be conflated with the 12 million worldwide shipment estimate.
Why supply and the two-model lineup mattered
In explaining the estimate, Ahmad pointed to strong demand and supply constraints. The Series X was the higher-end model, while the lower-cost Series S was digital-only. TweakTown reported Ahmad’s view that increased Series S production helped Microsoft make more consoles available than if it had produced only Series X.

That context is consistent with contemporaneous comments about demand outstripping supply, but it does not independently verify the 12 million estimate. As quoted by GameSpot in January 2022, Xbox head Phil Spencer said it was difficult to find either a new Xbox or PlayStation because demand exceeded supply. His remarks describe the market situation, not a unit-sales count.

No. It is a historical estimate reported in January 2022. The cited coverage does not establish a current cumulative total, the split between Series X and Series S, or current stock and pricing. The figure should not be presented as Microsoft’s confirmed sales number or as a current 2026 tally.
