As of Roblox’s January 7, 2026 announcement, age checks for in-game chat were rolling out worldwide in regions where chat is available. Roblox said prompts were appearing in the United States and certain other regions, with rollout to the remaining chat-enabled regions expected over the following week; it did not say every account would be prompted on the same day. The check is intended to place users in age-based chat groups, not to require every player to submit a government ID.
Why Roblox is asking players to check their age
Roblox says the age check helps determine which users can communicate by default. Its January 7, 2026 announcement described facial age estimation in the app as part of the chat-check rollout. The requirement had begun in some regions in December before the worldwide announcement; Roblox said the rollout was for regions where chat is available. Country rules, account eligibility, product availability, and prompts may differ or change.
Roblox also reported that “dozens of millions” of daily active users had completed an age check, without giving a precise count or clear measurement date. That should not be read as evidence that every account had already been checked.
How the age-based chat groups work
Roblox says users can chat with people in their own age group and the groups directly above and below it. As an example, Roblox said users aged 9–12 can interact with users under 9 and users aged 13–15. Group ranges may vary by region and product. Roblox says the system is intended to limit communication between adults and children under 16; it is a default access structure, not a claim that all unwanted contact is eliminated.

What children and parents should know
Roblox says users under 9 need parental consent to access chat. Its July 2024 safety overview also says parents can limit or disable online chat. The available Roblox information does not establish one universal set of current menu steps for granting consent or changing chat settings, so the exact controls may depend on the account and current platform interface.
Roblox describes other safeguards, including chat limits, automated filtering, moderation, and abuse reporting. These are platform measures Roblox says it provides; they do not guarantee that every risk is prevented.

What happens during the age check—and what Roblox says about privacy
The January 2026 announcement describes facial age estimation using images or video in the app. Roblox says those materials are deleted immediately after secure processing. That is the company’s description of its handling; the cited material does not include an independent privacy audit or a complete walkthrough of the current process.
Roblox reported a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for its age-estimation models for users under 18 in testing through the UK Age Verification Certification Scheme. This is a Roblox-reported test result, not a guarantee of an individual result across every device or user; the underlying certification report was not reviewed in the available material.

If the result seems wrong or you cannot complete it
Roblox says users may appeal an outcome through alternative methods, including identity verification or parental controls that let a parent update a child’s age. Availability can depend on the user’s age, account, region, and the reason for the appeal. The announcement does not establish a single route that is available to everyone, or provide a universal sequence of support steps.
Roblox described a separate identity-verification process in a September 21, 2021 announcement for users 13 and older: scan a government-issued ID card, driver’s license, or passport, then take a selfie for liveness and likeness matching. That older description is historical context; it does not establish that the current chat age check requires an ID document. Follow the options Roblox presents for the account rather than assuming the old workflow applies.

What the rollout figures do—and do not—show
Roblox’s January 2026 announcement said more than 50% of daily active users in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands had completed checks where chat checks had been required since early December. The excerpt does not specify the year for that December. This is a company-reported completion figure, not a measure of whether the policy prevents harm.
