Drive Beyond Horizons is listed as Playable on Steam Deck, but that label does not guarantee crash-free play. The developer has fixed several crashes in PC updates, yet the available notes do not identify a universal Steam Deck crash fix. Start with the game’s update status and compatibility settings, then narrow down when the crash happens.
Is Drive Beyond Horizons playable on Steam Deck?
Steam’s compatibility metadata labels Drive Beyond Horizons Playable and says it runs successfully on SteamOS. The record shows a compatibility test dated August 25, 2026, and notes that you may need to configure graphics settings manually for good performance. It also lists usability caveats involving controller functionality, touchscreen or virtual keyboard use, controller icons, text entry, and small in-game text. These caveats describe compatibility and usability; they do not promise that every launch or session will be stable. Steam Deck compatibility record
The developer wrote in a March 24, 2026 controller-support note, “Also, the game works on Steam Deck now!” That confirms general Deck support, not that every crash has been fixed. The same note says a controller acting like keyboard emulation may be related to Steam Input configuration and points players to the Steam Overlay to change the game’s input configuration. Why might the game still crash?
Drive Beyond Horizons remains in Early Access. Its Steam store page tells players to expect bugs, balancing issues, incomplete features, placeholder content, and ongoing changes. Steam store page

In a June 5, 2026 update, the developer said the game may still have performance issues, bugs, or crashes. The update addressed multiple problems, including an earlier backup-history memory issue that could produce large VRAM and RAM spikes and potentially crash the game or system. It also lists a fatal crash after updating and a crash at the “Start New Game” screen among issues fixed in that build. The notes do not say these problems were specific to Steam Deck, and they cannot establish the cause of a different player’s crash. Developer update announcement
What to try when Drive Beyond Horizons crashes
- Check for a game update. In Steam, open the game’s page in your Library and install any available update. This is especially relevant if the crash began after an update or happens at “Start New Game”; the developer’s June 2026 notes say fixes for particular crash issues were included in that build. The notes do not establish that this resolves all Deck crashes.
- Try a compatibility tool if the game will not launch. In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties, then Compatibility. A Steam community discussion from July 2025 suggests enabling a compatibility tool and trying Proton Experimental; a reply dated December 9, 2025 suggests Proton-GE, saying it includes codecs for the intro video. These are older, user-generated suggestions—not an official recommendation or a proven fix. Try one option at a time so you can tell whether anything changes. - Check Steam Input if controller behavior is unusual. If the controller acts like a keyboard or the controls are wrong, open the Steam Overlay and review the game’s input configuration, following the developer’s March 2026 guidance. This may address an input problem; it is not evidence of a crash fix.
- Adjust graphics settings if performance is poor. The Steam Deck compatibility record says manual graphics configuration may be needed for good performance. Poor performance and a crash are different symptoms, so change graphics settings only if performance is part of what you are experiencing.
Pin down where the crash occurs
The point of failure helps separate a launch or video issue from a new-game, save-loading, or in-session crash. Before changing several settings, note the details below; they make it easier to tell whether a compatibility change helped and to report a reproducible bug.

- Does the game close at launch, during the intro, at “Start New Game,” while loading a save, or during play?
- Did the problem begin immediately after a game update?
- Which compatibility tool is selected in Properties > Compatibility, if any?
- Is Steam Input affecting controller behavior, or does the game crash even when input is working normally?
The developer asks bug reporters to provide reproduction steps and logs where available. The cited sources do not publish a Steam Deck crash rate, Deck-specific frame rate, or success rate, so the Playable label and community reports should not be treated as measurements of how often crashes happen.
