If services are up, try Ethernet, restart your modem and router, and reduce competing network use. These steps help narrow down common causes; lag alone cannot tell you whether the problem is Wi-Fi, your home network, your ISP, PSN, or NBA 2K’s servers.
1. Check NBA 2K and PlayStation Network status
Before changing router settings, check the NBA 2K server-status page for an issue affecting your platform or game mode, and check PlayStation Network status for a PSN incident. If either service reports a problem, local network changes are unlikely to fix that outage. Wait for the service to recover, then try again.
2. Test the PS5’s internet connection
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. This is an official first diagnostic step recommended in 2K’s console networking troubleshooting guide; PlayStation also recommends testing the connection when investigating server-connection errors.
Use the test as a check on the console’s network connection, not a definitive diagnosis of NBA 2K25’s online performance. A successful result does not establish that every part of the route to the game server is free of problems.

3. Try Ethernet if the PS5 is on Wi-Fi
If you currently use Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and test multiplayer again. 2K notes that “Wireless signals (Wi-Fi) can often experience interference and the signal quality can drop over time.” A wired connection removes Wi-Fi from the local connection, making it a useful troubleshooting comparison—not a guaranteed cure for ISP, PSN, or game-server issues.
You only need a cable for this test if you do not already have one. There is no published figure here for how much Ethernet reduces NBA 2K25 latency.

4. Restart the modem and router
- Disconnect the modem and router from power.
- Leave them unplugged for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect them and allow the internet connection to restore before testing NBA 2K25 again.
This restart is among the steps in 2K’s networking guidance, and PlayStation also recommends restarting the router for server-connection errors. It may help with a local network problem, but it will not resolve a confirmed service outage.
5. Reduce other network traffic
Large downloads, streaming, or other online games using the same connection can compete for network capacity. 2K warns that networks under heavy use are more at risk of disconnection issues and suggests trying again when fewer people are online. Pause heavy activity where practical and compare the game’s performance.

6. Treat router-feature changes as a last test
2K lists dynamic packet filtering or stateful inspection, Quality of Service (QoS), and UPnP among router features players may review. These settings vary by router, so do not change them blindly or assume any one setting is the cause. If you try a change and it makes no difference, restore the previous setting or router defaults before moving on.
7. Send useful details to 2K Support if lag continues
If the problem persists after the basic checks, contact 2K Support and include the information its troubleshooting guide requests. Helpful details include:

- A legible screenshot of any error message.
- A screenshot of the console’s connection or speed-test results.

These details help support investigate the connection without assuming that the symptom has a single cause.

The US PlayStation Store listing says NBA 2K25 supports up to 10 online players with PS Plus. It lists Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyLEAGUE as available offline; other modes and features require an internet connection. The same US listing displays a notice that NBA 2K25 multiplayer servers will shut down on December 31, 2026, after which functions that depend on online servers will no longer work. Check the current US PlayStation Store listing for the applicable notice and availability details.
