Black Ops 6 is currently listed as Unsupported on Steam Deck and SteamOS, so a crash may reflect a broader compatibility problem rather than a fixable local glitch. Steam’s general troubleshooting steps can rule out some issues, but they are not a confirmed fix for this game. If local play still fails, GeForce NOW is a cloud-streaming alternative documented for Steam Deck; check its current storefront support and your account entitlement before setting it up.

Why Black Ops 6 crashes on Steam Deck

SteamDB’s compatibility record lists Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as Unsupported on Steam Deck and SteamOS. Its compatibility test is dated July 10, 2026. Check the Black Ops 6 Steam Deck compatibility record.

Valve defines the Unsupported category this way: “The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck.” Valve also notes that Verified games running through Proton need compatibility for the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat. The record lists RICOCHET Anti-Cheat, but that does not establish anti-cheat as the cause of any individual crash. The rating describes the game’s compatibility status; it is not a diagnosis of your particular Deck or installation. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility categories.

These steps may help identify a local system or configuration problem. They do not change the Unsupported rating or guarantee that Black Ops 6 will run.

  1. Install SteamOS updates and restart. Open Settings > System, install any available updates, then restart the Deck. Steam Support recommends updates and a restart for system instability.
  2. Temporarily disable third-party apps. If you use add-ons or other third-party software, disable them and see whether the behavior changes.
  3. Try the latest Proton version. Steam Support lists trying the latest Proton as a general troubleshooting option for Steam app stability or performance issues. This is a diagnostic step, not a known Black Ops 6 workaround.
  4. Lower graphics settings. If the game reaches its settings menu, reduce graphics settings and test again. This is another general Steam suggestion, not a confirmed remedy for the compatibility limitation.

For Valve’s broader instructions, see the Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Which Activision troubleshooting steps apply?

Activision’s cited Black Ops 6 crash guidance is for Windows PC and consoles, not Steam Deck. Its PC troubleshooting page says the game supports Windows 10 and Windows 11; it recommends letting shader preloading finish, closing interfering applications, verifying Steam game files, and submitting a PC crash report if needed. These steps are relevant to a Windows PC installation, but they are not a SteamOS fix. Activision’s Black Ops 6 PC troubleshooting guide.

Activision’s separate crash and freezing article covers Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Its PC advice includes checking system requirements, closing background apps, and updating video drivers; it does not provide a Steam Deck remedy. Activision’s crash and freezing guidance. Play through GeForce NOW instead

If you want to play without relying on local SteamOS compatibility, NVIDIA documents a GeForce NOW setup for Steam Deck. The game runs in NVIDIA’s cloud and streams to the Deck; this does not repair a local installation. NVIDIA’s July 2026 library announcement lists Black Ops 6 through Ubisoft Connect. Its October 2024 launch announcement also listed Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox/PC Game Pass versions, so verify the current supported storefront and that your account has access before proceeding.

NVIDIA’s setup instructions explain how to install GeForce NOW on Steam Deck and add it to the Steam Library for Gaming Mode: GeForce NOW download and setup. See NVIDIA’s July 2026 library announcement and October 2024 Black Ops 6 launch announcement for storefront details. Cloud play depends on regional availability and a suitable internet connection; consult NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements.

Where to report a persistent crash

For a crash on a supported Windows PC, Activision provides a PC crash-report option through its PC troubleshooting page. For Steam Deck or SteamOS problems, Valve directs users to Steam Support and Steam Deck discussions in its troubleshooting guide.
