If BioShock 2 Remastered crashes on Steam Deck, first identify what “crashing” means: the game may exit during launch, remain open with a black screen and menu audio, or fail later during play. Community reports describe different workarounds for those symptoms, but none establishes a universal fix. Try the relevant reversible steps below one at a time.
Identify where the failure happens
Before changing settings, note which version you are playing and what the Deck does:

- Launch failure: Steam shows the game starting, then returns to the Play button.
- Black screen with audio: the game appears to stay open and you can hear menu sounds, but the display remains dark.
- Crash during play: gameplay begins, then the game exits or stops responding.
These symptoms are not interchangeable, and the available player reports do not establish one cause for all of them. Record your SteamOS and Proton selection, whether the Deck is docked, and the point at which the failure occurs. The reports do not identify a particular Deck model or SteamOS version as the cause.
If the game exits during launch, test Proton Experimental
- In your Steam library, open BioShock 2 Remastered’s properties.
- Open Compatibility and enable the option to force the use of a compatibility tool.
- Select Proton Experimental, then try launching the game.
A player in the Steam Community discussion “Doesn’t function on Steam Deck” reported that Proton Experimental let the game launch. Other players in the same discussion reported that forcing Proton did not work for them, so treat this as a test rather than a guaranteed solution. Note your previous compatibility setting so you can restore it.

If you get a black screen with menu audio, try windowed mode
One Steam Deck player described launching with a black screen and background sounds. They reported using a Proton version to reach the game’s graphics settings, turning on Windowed Mode, and then relaunching without the forced compatibility setting. They also set the resolution to 1280×800, which the post identifies as the Steam Deck’s native resolution. The player said that turning Windowed Mode off brought the black screen back.
This is one player’s workaround, not a verified fix for every black-screen case. The full account is in the Steam Community post “Steam Deck Runs Well! (after a few easy tweaks)”. If you cannot reach the graphics settings in your current configuration, the report does not establish another reliable way to access them.

If it crashes during play, protect your progress
Save frequently, including with quick-save if available in your game. The author of the same Steam Community guide reported that quick-saving helped them avoid losing progress during several hours of play. That is a precaution against lost progress, not evidence that quick-saving prevents crashes.
Make changes one at a time
Because player outcomes differ, change one setting, test the same failure point, and note the result before trying another. This makes it easier to undo a change or tell whether it helped. The Steam Community thread “Doesn’t function on Steam Deck” contains conflicting reports about forcing Proton Experimental. A separate thread, “Game wont start”, describes a Deck user whose game launched to a dark screen with audio.
