The safest way to start S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is to prepare at a hub, travel light, keep healing items handy, and avoid treating every fight or anomaly as something you must push through. These 15 tips focus on practical early decisions, with the latest update context available as of September 1, 2026.
Before you leave a hub
1. Choose your campaign difficulty carefully
The official FAQ says you select campaign difficulty at the start and cannot change it during that run. Update 2.0 added Custom Rules difficulty, but its announcement does not enumerate every setting. Compare the options shown in your current in-game menu before starting; do not assume a particular preset or rule can be changed later. Official FAQ · Update 2.0 notes

2. Make hub visits your preparation loop
Before setting out, review your inventory, sell or stash surplus, buy supplies, repair equipment, check artifacts, and rest. Doing these tasks at a hub is safer and more deliberate than discovering a missing item or damaged weapon after you are already far from help. Official beginner guide
3. Watch your carried weight
Excess weight affects movement speed and stamina. Stash or sell goods you do not need for the next trip; discard items with no practical use if carrying them is slowing you down. Official inventory guidance

4. Take advantage of shared hub stashes
Items placed in a personal cache at one hub can be retrieved from another hub’s cache. Use the stash to keep useful equipment without carrying it everywhere. Official inventory guidance
5. Pack for the expedition, not for every possibility
The official guide recommends bringing first-aid kits, bandages, ammunition for primary and secondary weapons, anti-rads, energy drinks, and food. Treat that as a checklist of categories, not a fixed quantity: the right reserve depends on where you are going and what you expect to face. Official beginner guide
6. Put healing supplies in quick-access slots
When a fight turns urgent, searching through inventory costs time. Assign healing resources to quick-access slots and remember their distinct purposes: first-aid kits or food restore health, bandages address bleeding, and anti-rads or vodka help with radiation. Official beginner guide

During combat
7. Use cover, but do not assume it makes you safe
Walls, trees, and boxes can protect you while you assess a fight or return fire. Enemies use cover too, so watch their positions and angles rather than staying fixed in one spot. Official combat advice
8. Match your weapon to the distance
A shotgun can suit close-range encounters; a scoped weapon lets you engage a dangerous enemy from farther away. Choose based on the distance and threat instead of expecting one weapon to be best in every situation. Official combat advice
9. Avoid turning every encounter into a long firefight
Ammunition and first-aid kits are limited, and prolonged fights can consume supplies you need later. Take useful shots, reposition when it helps, and consider whether continuing the engagement is worth the cost. Official combat advice

10. Retreat when the fight is going badly
If an encounter is too dangerous, escape and plan again. Leaving a bad fight is a practical survival decision, not a failed attempt; you can return better prepared or approach from another direction. Official combat advice
11. Loot only when it is safe
Caches may hold medicine, food, and ammunition, and enemy bodies can replenish ammunition. Cache locations can be marked using information from PDAs recovered from dead stalkers. First make sure the area is secure enough to search without being caught in the open. Official combat and looting advice

Hazards and navigation
12. Use bolts and a detector around anomalies
Anomalies are dangerous, and a spot that looks harmless is not proof that it is safe. The official beginner advice recommends bolts and a detector when navigating anomalous fields and looking for artifacts. Move cautiously rather than testing a suspicious area by walking straight into it. Official beginner guide · Official anomaly guide

13. Treat an Emission as a shelter drill
When an Emission begins, get to shelter and wait it out. Do not assume that any enclosed-looking location qualifies; use a shelter the game recognizes as safe. Official beginner guide
14. Use the PDA to plan and keep track
The PDA map shows explored regions, locations, quest markers, and caches. Its mission log and notes help you revisit objectives and information, while its upgrade view and training materials support equipment planning and learning. Check it when you need context instead of relying on memory alone. Official PDA guide

15. Save when the game allows it
Manual saves are generally available except during combat or story-restricted moments, and the game also saves automatically at key points. After death, you reload a save and redo progress made since that save, so make a manual save when you are safe and have reached a useful stopping point. Official FAQ

What Update 2.0 changes about older advice
GSC Game World’s Update 2.0, Back to the Zone, was dated September 1, 2026. It upgrades the game to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, improves A-Life, adds three binocular types, new weapons and scopes, a PDA Statistics page, and Custom Rules difficulty, and includes over 500 bug fixes. The announcement also says stalkers loot fallen characters even when the player is not nearby and describes additional contested points of interest. Older beginner advice can still help with fundamentals, but descriptions of systems may not cover everything in the current version. GSC Game World: Update 2.0
Update 1.7, dated November 18, 2025, introduced Master Difficulty and Expedition Mode and changed A-Life, NPC combat, inventory, and stamina. Update 2.0 is later and should take precedence where it adds newer information. GSC Game World: Update 1.7
