There is no single fix for every S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat crash. Start with when it fails—before the menu, during a video, while loading a save, or after play begins—then check whether your copy is from Steam or GOG, whether it is modded, and which Windows version and graphics hardware you use. The remedies below are symptom-led; none is guaranteed to address every installation.
First, identify the crash pattern
Before changing anything, note the exact point of failure and preserve your saves and configuration files. Back them up before attempting changes, and keep the game log if one is present in the installation. Record whether the installation is unmodified or uses mods, the store build, Windows version, and GPU model. These details help distinguish a video playback issue from a launch freeze, save-related crash, or instability after the game is running.

- Before the menu: note whether the game freezes during startup or fails with an error.
- During an intro or other cutscene: check whether the failure happens at the same video each time.
- While loading a save: try to determine whether the problem affects one save or all saves, without overwriting the original.
- After some play: note what was happening immediately before the crash and whether it recurs in the same area or situation.
GOG’s game-specific support page separately identifies general crashes, FMV/cutscene crashes, and Intel HD launch freezes. That separation is useful for choosing a next step, but it does not establish that every crash in one category has the same cause. GOG’s Call of Pripyat support page

GOG copy: use its game-specific support route
If you own the GOG version, consult the GOG support page for Call of Pripyat, especially the relevant crash or freeze category. The page also explains how to prepare a system report for support. Its categories are a guide to reporting the symptom, not proof that a particular fix will work on every PC.

Steam copy on 12th-generation Intel hardware and Windows 11
A Steam Community announcement search result describes a minor renderer-initialization update intended to address freezing on 12th-generation Intel Core systems running Windows 11. It associates the change with DX9 support on Intel integrated graphics and discrete Arc GPUs. The announcement page could not be retrieved, so treat this as a lead to check against your installed build—not a verified fix for all launch freezes or crashes. The Steam announcement search result is the available reference; confirm current applicability through Steam or GSC support before relying on it.
Crash during an intro or cutscene
Because GOG lists FMV/cutscene crashes as a distinct category, report the failure as a video-related symptom rather than simply saying the game crashes. Note which video triggers it and whether it happens consistently. The available support material does not establish one universal cutscene remedy for both store versions, so avoid applying an unrelated launch-freeze fix solely because the failure occurs early.
Crash while loading a save or after gameplay begins
Keep the original save untouched and note whether other saves or a new game reach the same point. If the installation is modded, include the mod status and any recent changes when seeking help; the available sources do not provide a confirmed mod-specific fix or a basis for ranking troubleshooting steps by success rate.
Keep the old requirements in perspective
The published specifications are historical requirements, not a promise of stability on current hardware or Windows. The two official references differ, so they should not be combined into one definitive list.

Steam also states that Steam Client support is for Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. That is a client-support policy, separate from the game’s original system requirements; it does not show that every configuration of this older game will run without crashes on current Windows.

- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter dxdiag and press Enter.
- In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select Save All Information… and save the report.
- Attach the saved report to your support request. Include the crash stage, store version, Windows version, GPU, whether the game is modded, and any relevant log you preserved.
Use the GOG support page for its instructions. Steam lists the game’s technical-support contact information on its technical issue page.
