That was an estimate based on asking prices—not proof that particular consoles sold at a loss, or that every scalper lost money.
What the November 2024 report actually found
On November 11, 2024, PC Gamer reported that standard PS5 Pro consoles were listed in the US and UK for Sony’s $699 launch benchmark or slightly less, while the console remained widely available through retailers. The outlet reasoned that listing costs and shipping could erase a reseller’s margin. It did not document completed transactions, individual purchase prices, or sellers’ accounts, so the claim that some resellers might lose money was an inference rather than a verified tally of losses. Why a listing at MSRP can still mean a loss
A seller’s result depends on the gap between what they paid and what they ultimately receive—not just the price shown in a listing. The report did not establish any seller’s acquisition price or exact fees, so it cannot show whether a specific listing was profitable.
- Asking price is not sale price: a listing at or below retail does not show that a buyer completed the purchase at that amount.
- Costs reduce proceeds: listing charges and shipping can cut into the seller’s return. The report did not publish a fee schedule or calculate costs for individual resellers.
- Availability matters: PC Gamer attributed the weak US and UK resale picture in part to lower apparent demand and broad retail availability. It did not provide a measured demand series or inventory count.
The resale picture differed by country
The November 2024 report described US and UK listings near or below the launch-price benchmark, but said Japanese resellers were still asking for markups of about $65–$130. Those were reported listing observations, not confirmed sale prices. They show why the headline should not be read as a universal claim about PS5 Pro reselling worldwide. PC Gamer

PS5 Pro price benchmarks changed after launch
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a November 7 launch and region-specific recommended prices. Sony said it was available through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers at those launch prices on November 7. Sony also stated that the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive was sold separately. | Market | Launch recommended price, announced in 2024 | Later recommended price |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $699.99 USD | $899.99 USD, effective April 2, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | £699.99 GBP | £789.99 GBP, effective April 2, 2026 |
| Europe | €799.99 EUR | €899.99 EUR, effective April 2, 2026 |
| Japan | ¥119,980 JPY, including tax | ¥137,980 JPY, effective April 2, 2026 |
The launch prices were published by Sony in 2024; Sony announced the later prices on March 27, 2026, for effect on April 2. A November 2024 listing should be judged against the applicable 2024 benchmark, not retroactively against the later price. Sony said the 2026 increase reflected “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That was Sony’s explanation for its later price decision, not for the 2024 resale conditions. What the headline does—and does not—establish
The evidence supports a narrow conclusion: in November 2024, some US and UK resellers were reportedly listing standard PS5 Pro consoles close to or below launch MSRP, and PC Gamer estimated that costs could leave some around break-even or at a loss. It does not establish completed-sale prices, a market-wide loss rate, or that every reseller lost money. Japan’s reported markups also show that conditions varied by market.
