If SMITE 2 is crashing on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then test without third-party Desktop Mode apps. After that, check the game’s Deck compatibility details and try one reversible change at a time. Steam’s guidance covers general Steam Deck app troubleshooting; the only SMITE 2-specific Deck fix-like report here is one player’s anecdotal success switching from DX12 to DX11 for an assertion error, so it is not a guaranteed fix.
Try these Steam Deck troubleshooting steps in order
Change one thing at a time and relaunch SMITE 2 after each step. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped. The first recommendations below come from Steam’s general Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance, not from a confirmed SMITE 2 crash test.
1. Install SteamOS updates and restart
- Open Steam → Settings → System → Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Restart using Steam → Power → Restart, then launch SMITE 2 again.
2. Temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode apps
Exit or temporarily disable third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode, then restart the Deck and test the game. Steam recommends this as a general check for app instability. This does not identify any particular add-on as the cause.
3. Check SMITE 2’s Deck compatibility details
Open the SMITE 2 Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility section. Steam uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The current category is not established here, so check the live listing rather than relying on an assumed rating. If it says Playable or Unsupported, inspect the stated criteria; a label alone does not explain why your copy crashes.

4. Try the latest Proton compatibility tool
- In your Library, select SMITE 2 → Properties → Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available, then launch the game to test it.
This is Steam’s general troubleshooting suggestion for Steam apps, not a SMITE 2-specific remedy. Steam warns that changing the compatibility tool can cause the Windows version to download if you had installed a Linux version.
5. Lower the graphics settings if the game opens
If you can reach the graphics menu, select a lower preset or reduce individual settings and see whether the crash changes. Steam recommends lowering graphics settings when a game performs poorly, but that guidance does not establish that a particular setting, frame-rate cap, or power limit will stop SMITE 2 crashes.

6. Test DX11 only if the option is available and the error is relevant
One Steam Deck player reported that choosing DX11 rather than DX12 resolved their incident, which involved an “Assertion failed!” message and a freeze after opening a Steam microtransaction popup. The report is anecdotal; the player did not establish the underlying cause, and it does not show that DX11 fixes other crashes.
If SMITE 2 exposes a DX11/DX12 choice at startup or in its settings, try DX11 as a reversible test for a similar assertion error. Return to your previous setting if it makes things worse. A separate Valve Proton issue report describes a Vulkan assertion on exit on an RTX 4080 PC, not a Steam Deck crash during play; it is not confirmation of a Deck fix.

7. Contact support with details about the crash
If the problem continues after updating and restarting, Steam suggests reviewing Deck discussions, checking whether you are participating in the Steam Deck Beta for possible recent changes, or contacting Steam Support. For a SMITE 2 report, include the exact error text or a photo, when the crash occurs, your SteamOS and Proton versions, and which renderer (if any) was selected. Those are listed PC requirements, not a Steam Deck certification or proof that the Deck cannot run the game. Use the live Deck compatibility details and your own test results to assess the current situation.
