Sony and NCSOFT also describe a ten-minute gameplay and developer-commentary video featuring NCSOFT CEO and Chief Creative Officer Taekjin Kim and executive producer Sunggu Lee. Guerrilla Studio Director and Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek appears in developer interview material.
Is Sony making the Horizon MMO?
The shorthand headline needs a distinction: Sony Interactive Entertainment owns the Horizon franchise, and Guerrilla is the studio behind the series, but NCSOFT is identified as the developer and publisher of Horizon Steel Frontiers. Guerrilla is collaborating and providing support, rather than being described as the sole developer. What kind of game is Horizon Steel Frontiers?
It is an MMORPG set in the Horizon universe, in the Deadlands, which official materials describe as the lands of machine hunters. The announcement highlights machine-hunting action, mechanical creatures, large-scale battles, customizable combat, and familiar MMORPG systems. The intended mix is Horizon-style encounters within a persistent multiplayer role-playing game.
Guerrilla says players will be able to combine tribe-specific traits, appearances, and gear setups to create distinct machine hunters. Studio Director and Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek described the project’s tone as distinct while still fitting the wider universe: “Whenever I get the chance to jump into an early gameplay test, what really stands out is Horizon Steel Frontiers’ distinctive tone and atmosphere. It has a unique identity of its own, brought to life by NCSOFT’s developers. Yet it fits perfectly within the Horizon universe – and that balance between quintessential Horizon and something fresh really excites me about this project.”

Which platforms are announced?
The announced platforms are mobile and PC. Guerrilla calls the game mobile-first and says PC play will be available through NCSOFT’s PURPLE platform; the announcement characterizes it as cross-platform. The materials do not announce a PS5 or other console version, so a console release should not be assumed.
