Sony Interactive Entertainment now reports that PS5 had sold-in more than 95 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Sony’s financial figures count units sold into the channel, not confirmed purchases by players.
Is 84.2 million the current PS5 sales total?
No. Sony’s current company page reports more than 95 million PS5 units sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. The precise 84.2 million figure is not stated in the official Sony sources cited here; Sony’s own November 2025 fifth-anniversary retrospective described the console as having cumulatively sold over 84 million units globally.
That makes 84.2 million a dated figure rather than the latest count. The difference in precision matters, too: Sony’s retrospective gives a rounded “over 84 million” milestone, not an exact 84.2 million total.
What does Sony mean by “sold-in”?
Sony’s financial reporting labels hardware unit sales as sell-in. In practical terms, that is a measure of units supplied into the sales channel; it should not be read as a count of consoles confirmed to have been bought by end users. Sony’s 2021 announcement used a different measure for an earlier milestone: more than 10 million units sold through globally as of July 18, 2021.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Those figures are not interchangeable. Any comparison of console sales should match the measure, geography, and reporting date—especially when one number is sell-in and another is sell-through.
How did the milestone develop?
PS5 launched on November 12, 2020. Sony reported that the system had passed 10 million sold-through units globally by July 18, 2021. In its FY2025 Q2 supplement, Sony Group reported 3.9 million PS5 hardware units for the quarter ending September 30, 2025, on a sell-in basis; the same supplement listed 2.5 million for FY2025 Q1.

By the console’s fifth anniversary in November 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment described cumulative global sales as over 84 million. The later company-page figure—more than 95 million sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026—is the most current total in the cited Sony material.

Sony’s fifth-anniversary retrospective also reported that more than 7,500 PS5 games had been published by over 4,000 creators around the world. Those are Sony-published ecosystem figures, not an independently audited count. They provide context for the platform’s reach, but they do not change what the hardware sales measure represents.
