Silent Hill f is a striking, ambitious horror game whose story and themes make a stronger impression than its combat. In TechRadar’s review, James Pickard praises its narrative, performances and replay value, but finds the melee fighting cumbersome and the atmosphere and pacing uneven. Whether that trade-off works for you depends largely on how much combat frustration you will tolerate to see the story through.
What is Silent Hill f about?
Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows high-school student Shimizu Hinako in her hometown of Ebisugaoka, where a creeping fog transforms the town. Konami describes it as the first entry in the SILENT HILL series set in Japan. The publisher credits Ryukishi07 with the narrative, kera with creature and character designs, and Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage with the music; those credits identify the creators, rather than establish how well the story or score works for every player. What does the review praise—and what gets in the way?
A story with ambition
Pickard’s strongest praise is for the narrative and its themes. He also highlights the performances and cinematics. The story’s emotional weight and willingness to take risks are the main reasons he considers the game compelling, even when its mechanics frustrate.
Combat is a recurring obstacle
The melee combat is the review’s central criticism: Pickard describes it as slow and cumbersome. Combat is not an occasional detour, either; some encounters are mandatory. If you dislike deliberate melee systems or want horror that prioritizes tension over repeated fights, that is a significant part of the decision.

Atmosphere and pacing do not stay even
The review finds the atmosphere inconsistent and the transitions and pacing disjointed. That unevenness matters because the game’s story and horror depend on mood as well as plot. Its most effective moments do not guarantee a consistently absorbing experience from one section to the next.
Is Silent Hill f worth replaying?
Pickard found reasons to return to the game and uncover more of its story. He played for about 14 hours on PlayStation 5 Pro and completed it twice; his first playthrough took a little over eight hours. Those are the reviewer’s own playthrough figures, not a guarantee of how long another player will take. The prospect of discovering more narrative can make a second run appealing, but it also means replay tolerance is part of the game’s fit: the combat criticism may feel more pronounced if you are reluctant to revisit encounters.

Pickard reports three color-blindness filters, customizable subtitles and preset controller layouts on console. The game also has separate combat and puzzle difficulty settings, but the reviewer says they cannot be changed after a playthrough starts.
