To make players walk faster in a Roblox experience you own, create a sprint mechanic that raises the character’s Humanoid.WalkSpeed while sprint input is active and restores the normal speed when it ends. This is a Roblox Studio development feature—not a way to change movement in someone else’s game. Because clients can modify their own movement, speed changes alone cannot enforce fair-play rules.
Choose the kind of speed mechanic you want

These are different designs, not interchangeable versions of the same script. A June 7, 2020 Roblox Developer Forum discussion captures the progressive-speed idea in its title, “Speed Script That makes you faster the more you walk?”
What Roblox’s WalkSpeed property controls
A character’s Humanoid gives its model the ability to walk and interact with an experience. Its WalkSpeed property is the relevant setting for a basic sprint mechanic. Roblox documents 16 studs per second as the default reference used by its default animation script to scale movement animations; that reference does not guarantee every experience uses that speed. A typical sprint design changes speed only for the duration of the sprint. The normal speed, sprint speed, whether the input is held or toggled, and how a sprint ends are choices for the experience—not universal Roblox settings. The Humanoid reference also documents MoveDirection as read-only and a Running event that reports running speed.

Build and place the mechanic in your own experience
The Roblox Developer Forum has a historical Shift-to-sprint example intended for StarterPlayerScripts, posted May 6, 2020. The author also linked a mobile-oriented version. These are community examples, not current official templates, and their code has not been established here as tested or guaranteed to work with a present-day project. Use the official Humanoid reference for API behavior and adapt input and character lifecycle handling to your game.
- Decide your speed rules. Set the experience’s normal movement speed, sprint speed, and whether sprinting is hold-to-run or toggle-to-run. Decide what should stop a sprint, such as releasing the input or a game-specific condition.
- Choose input for your target devices. A keyboard control such as Shift is one desktop pattern. Touch controls need an appropriate on-screen interaction; gamepad behavior should be designed and checked for the experience rather than assumed from an old forum post.
- Handle the character lifecycle. A character can be replaced when a player respawns, so the mechanic needs to work with the current character and its Humanoid rather than assuming one character instance lasts for the whole session.
- Separate input from authority. A client-facing script can respond to player input and present the sprint effect. If speed affects fairness, rewards, access, or other important game state, have the server validate the player’s eligibility and movement rules.
- Test the full gameplay path. Check starting and ending a sprint, respawning, and any device-specific controls in the context of your experience. Confirm the normal speed is restored when sprinting ends.
The old forum resource’s mobile and Xbox comments describe what its author said at that time; they do not establish current compatibility across Roblox devices. See the 2020 Shift-to-Sprint forum resource for the historical example.

Why WalkSpeed is not an anti-cheat
Roblox explicitly warns that WalkSpeed is client-replicated and can be modified locally, so it should not be used as a security mechanism or as the sole way to prevent Humanoid movement. A LocalScript that changes speed can implement an input response for your game, but it cannot make that speed value trustworthy.
Roblox’s network ownership guidance explains that a client controlling its character can manipulate movement and set its Humanoid’s WalkSpeed to any value. The security tactics documentation says critical logic should be validated server-side or run exclusively on the server. If sprinting grants an advantage or affects game outcomes, validate the entitlement and relevant movement rules on the server instead of trusting a client-reported speed.

Use Creator Store assets cautiously
A prebuilt model is not necessary for a basic sprint feature. Roblox Creator Hub warns that third-party Creator Store models can contain backdoor scripts. If you choose to use a model, inspect its scripts and understand what they do before adding it to your experience; do not assume an asset is safe simply because it is available in the Store.
