What Somber Smithing Stone [1] does
The item reinforces an eligible special armament by one level, taking it to +1. Somber stones are used for special armaments; ordinary weapons generally require regular Smithing Stones. The two materials are not interchangeable. Bandai Namco’s combat guide explains that Somber upgrades use one stone per level, while a regular weapon requires several normal stones for an upgrade.
The bracketed number identifies the tier of stone. [1] is the first tier, for the first upgrade step—not a weapon level or a quantity to collect.
Which weapons can use it?
Only armaments eligible for the Somber upgrade path can use Somber Smithing Stones. If a weapon does not appear as eligible when you try to upgrade it, that is usually because it belongs to the regular Smithing Stone path instead. Check the weapon’s upgrade eligibility rather than trying to substitute one stone type for the other.

For example, a special armament such as the Meteoric Ore Blade uses the Somber path; an ordinary weapon uses regular Smithing Stones. The weapon’s name alone is not a reliable guide, so verify the upgrade option at a smith.

The +10 and +25 caps describe the separate upgrade progressions, not what a tier-one stone accomplishes by itself. Somber Smithing Stone [1] raises an eligible armament by one level, to +1.

Where to find Somber Smithing Stone [1]
The community-maintained Elden Ring item reference lists tier-one stones in several early-game areas, including Limgrave Tunnels, Limgrave, Morne Tunnel, Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel, and Stormveil Castle. It also lists Teardrop Scarab drops and other locations.
- Limgrave Tunnels: One listed pickup is on a platform reached by dropping along the shaft wall.
- Castle Morne: The reference lists a pickup behind the castle.
These are location leads from a community-maintained database; use its map or another current guide for exact routes and navigation.

Buying one from Smithing Master Iji
A Gamer Guides database entry lists Smithing Master Iji in Liurnia as a seller of Somber Smithing Stone [1] for 2,000 runes. This vendor and price are secondary-source details, so check the in-game shop before relying on them.

Upgrading is a practical option when a fight is taking too long. Bandai Namco advises exploring for more Smithing Stones and improving a weapon before challenging a difficult boss. Since this stone provides only the first Somber upgrade, it is useful when your eligible armament is still at its starting level.
