Sony reported continuing-operations sales up 5% year over year; the 8% figure was an increase to its full-year operating-income forecast compared with its August forecast. Separately, management set a PS5 install-base target of more than 90 million by the start of the next fiscal year—not an annual hardware-sales result.
What Sony reported in Q2 FY2025
Sony’s fiscal year runs from April through March, so Q2 FY2025 covers July through September 2025. In its FY2025 Q2 results, Sony reported ¥3,107.9 billion in continuing-operations sales, up 5% year over year, and ¥429.0 billion in continuing-operations operating income, up 10% year over year.
The 8% figure belongs to a different comparison: Sony raised its FY2025 full-year operating-income forecast to ¥1.43 trillion, ¥100 billion (8%) above its August forecast. It also raised its full-year sales forecast to ¥12.0 trillion, ¥300 billion (3%) above the August forecast. Those are changes to forecasts, not Q2 year-over-year growth rates.
What the PS5 target meant
In its FY2025 Q2 Q&A, Sony management said it intended to expand the PS5 install base during the year-end selling season, “targeting over 90 million units by the start of the next fiscal year.” That was a forward-looking install-base target. It was not a report that Sony had sold 90 million consoles during the year, nor an annual hardware-sales forecast in the same sense as units sold over a fiscal year.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony cautioned that actual results could differ materially from forward-looking statements and that investors should not place undue reliance on them. Asked about pricing strategy, management said it would “refrain from commenting.”
How later PS5 figures change the picture
Later disclosures provide context, but they should not be confused with the earlier target. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s hardware data page reports FY2025 PS5 sell-in of 16.0 million units and cumulative worldwide hardware sales of more than 95 million as of June 30, 2026. The page identifies these as sell-in figures and says returned and refurbished products are included. Sell-in is units shipped into the retail channel, rather than a direct count of purchases by consumers.

The same page lists 1.6 million PS5 hardware units sold on a sell-in basis in FY2026 Q1. A cumulative worldwide total, a full-year sell-in figure, a quarterly sell-in figure, and a management target describe different measures and periods; they are not interchangeable.
In its FY2026 Q1 outlook, Sony revised its consolidated full-year sales forecast to ¥12.5 trillion and operating-income forecast to ¥1.72 trillion. The company also said it had secured enough memory to meet its projected FY2026 PS5 hardware sales volume. That is a later supply and outlook statement, not confirmation that the earlier 90-million install-base target was achieved.

Which earnings report does the headline refer to?
The headline does not name a fiscal year, and the located FY2025 Q2 report does not support the claim that Q2 revenue rose 8%. The next Q2 release, for FY2026, was scheduled for November 5, 2026; as of October 8, 2026, it had not yet been reported. The FY2025 figures therefore clarify the 8% discrepancy, but do not establish which period the undated headline originally intended.
